Obviously, I'm not going to be upset if Purdy starts every game. Good post.

Good question.

I don't think Kyle takes any chances with Purdy not being completely healthy, even though it may risk losing a game or two with Lance as the starter.

Two things need to happen:

Lance plays very well in TC and PS, AND,

Purdy isn't quite ready yet on September 1.

The BIG question is; how do you pull Lance to put Purdy in if Lance is contributing in a substantial way to weekly wins?

This upcoming TC is going to be the most intensely watched that I can remember since Alex Smith's first year.

I am excited to see him play again too. I havent been this excited over a QB prospect in forever.

But with that being said, I am trying to pump the breaks a bit. While we havent seen very many QBs, if any, light the football world on fire so quickly like Purdy did, we also have seen plenty of QBs have instant success and just fizzle out. Now based on Purdy's play, he has not given me any reason to believe he is a flash in the pan, he is coming off a major injury. So while his ceiling and floor both look high, we really have no way of knowing if Purdy will be the same player, still be ascending, etc.

All we can be is cautiously optimistic about him moving forward.

The injury is definitely concerning but I'm confident that he will come back in tip top shape. Everything I've read and watched regarding the injury, Purdy has had about the best case scenario the whole way since surgery. His tissue was healthy, he's young and doesn't have much wear (Big Ben had like 14 years of wear), and rehab has gone really well so far.

outside of the injury, I'm very confident that he will continue playing at the same level or better. He's dedicated his time to improving his game this season and gained very valuable experience last season - especially playing in the playoffs.

he didn't rely on any sort of physical talent to play well (Like Murray does etc), he played the qb position at a high level. Very accurate, hit a lot of tight window throws, lead tons of scoring drives, clutch, efficient etc. just played quarterback at a high level, not like a wildcat qb that is only effective when they have to depend on their athleticism.

There really wasn't anything he did poorly, to where it raised red flags. There are a lot of things he can improve on, obviously, but nothing that should concern anyone to where he get worse. He could regress, no doubt, but we haven't seen any reason that should happen besides the injury rehab causing problems. I can't think of anything that he was "bad" at and that's extremely impressive. Still shocked he played so damn well and confident for a 7th round rookie - it's literally historical. Lol so awesome!

i just can't wait for him to heal up and see how he looks. I'm hoping his arm has some more velocity on it 😍.

Under no circumstances should we rush him back. If he doesn't feel right, he should take the week off and be reassessed. I'm going off of the medical timeline of 6 months, assuming that the time frame is adequate enough for a full recovery.

hmmm I wouldn't play Lance just to see if he can improve his value. I want to see him beat out Darnold first, because if he can't do that, then playing him would be a disaster anyways. I also think it would depend a lot on who our first 4 - 6 games will be against. I personally don't think he would help his value much if those are tough teams. Then again, he could be much improved.. idk. I just don't know why he would be significantly better after a major injury and getting essentially no additional experience.

i 100% understand what you're saying and the business move behind it. I just question that he would look good enough to really change his trade value, he would have to ball out and then at that point, why trade him? You know.

IF Purdy isn't ready week 1, I'd like to see whoever wins out between Darnold and Lance. If Lance can't beat him out, that's a serious problem.

i still question that we will keep all 3. Being a backup, especially a third string, is much much different in regards to responsibilities than a starter has during the week. They're essentially assistance coaches, they try to get the defense ready as the scout team QB and third string doesn't get any reps. So if I'm Lance or Darnold and I'm third string, I want to go elsewhere. I personally don't see us keeping all three and assume whoever loses the battle will get traded - even if it's not much. It'll depend a lot on injuries for other teams too, that could increase their value. Especially if you're a team like the commanders.

I still think the 49ers will give special treatment to Lance and give him every opportunity to be the starter until Purdy is ready.

The 49ers nor any team will ever say that players get special treatment over others, but it happens all the time in the NFL, and I think giving up three first round picks warrants special treatment.

So unless Sam makes Trey look like Scott Tolzien early in camp, I expect Trey to receive the first team reps, which nullifies the idea of a "camp battle" since teams value continuity going into week 1. In other words, I don't believe there will be a true QB competition like everyone assumes there will be.

I could be wrong about this but similar to Trey's first year, I don't believe that was a true QB competition either, as I believe their plan was to sit Lance all along. If you looked at Lance's "statistics" from his rookie camp, they appeared better than Jimmy's. That's why I think this idea Sam and Trey will battle it out in camp is misguided... there's more factors in play than just their performance in camp.

"The notion that Lance could overtake Garoppolo early in the season, which seemed so farfetched on draft day and after OTAs, appears far more realistic today," - Matt Barrows

As for his trade value, I could see it going either way. I mean, he only has to win 2 games to have a winning record. Fans have rightfully or IMO wrongfully taken so much from such a small sample size, if you're one of those people, then I don't see how he couldn't drastically improve his value with just a couple of games.
I think they'll give Lance every opportunity to as well, in an effort to salvage the investment in him, but I still think they may trade him. Also, it isn't like beating out darnold would be some special feat - he should win it if he's any good.

I've already accepted our losses with Lance. We will move forward with Purdy and the only way Lance sees the field is if he's injured. I've accepted that we blew three first round picks and a fourth (or was it a third), those drafts have passed and it is what it is. I'm not angry about it but I'm also willing to cut losses when we have a much better option in Purdy (regarding who's starter).

i doubt he makes such a drastic improvement that a team will offer a first, and if he does, why trade him? Just keep him as the backup to push Purdy. I don't want to spend a season or two giving him experience and seeing this roster have to Carry him, because the odds of us winning a super bowl with that type of play is minimal. Even if he does turn into a good qb after a season or two of playing, not elite, but good - then his rookie contract is up and we will have to pay him at least $40M, no thanks. Then we are in salary cap issues and have to get rid of talent and depend on Lance, no thanks.

I don't particularly care about his stats in camp because he was inconsistent and the defense had to ask him to be more aggressive, so that means he was playing like a game manager, no thanks.

When he has been the starter, he mustered 2TDs overall across three games. His only decent game was against the Texans and only like 3 other teams put up less points than us that season on their defense (colts and jags were two of them and they were horrible). So I don't even look at that as a good game.

he really needed this second year to showcase his potential growth and gain that experience and his injury screwed everything up, if didn't help that Purdy balled. Lol

if he does play, I'll be rooting for him for sure. I'd love to be proven wrong, honestly. I just don't see us keeping him as favorable for us in any way as the starter because of where he is in his contract now and his lack of experience. I just don't see him playing so well to where other teams jump at him and if he does, I'd rather keep him as a backup or to push Purdy.

The BIG question is; how do you pull Lance to put Purdy in if Lance is contributing in a substantial way to weekly wins?

This upcoming TC is going to be the most intensely watched that I can remember since Alex Smith's first year.

The safest way to do it is to pull Lance if he is playing well and then put Purdy on a short leash. What you don't want happening is him going with the "hot hand" and then if he starts to not play well, you pull him. That can mess with the team and send the wrong messages. I think you make it clear that Purdy is the starter when he comes back. That way there is no controversy. I think the only way you keep Lance in there is if he is playing at a ridiculously high level. "Good" isn't enough, IMO. Good is like playing as a 12-17th ranked qb in the league to me.

then it puts the pressure on Purdy to play better, and if he doesn't, you can make the switch without messing with the locker room.

i really don't think we will see darnold or Lance take the field this year as a starter. I think Purdy will play week 1. It may not happen but I think that's more likely than not, based off of the research I've done on his rehab, timing, and just reading up on the injury.

Is he contributing by running Kyle's offense or well by running? If the offense isn't looking the way we know it could/should look and his contributions are busted pass plays and running and not quite running Kyle's offense then I think it's an easier decision. IMO

Why can't more discussions be like this in our QB threads? Excellent post both WB and dj. Honestly, I like both Trey and Brock so whatever works best for the team coming from either QB is fine by me. I too am concerned of both the team and Brock rushing things and hope one or both of them doesn't let that happen; I want Brock's long term health to be good, even if that means missing games or even the season (don't think it will come to that)

Maybe I am reacting to QB drama & headlines, or had some iffy take out food but I think Brock has to play f-ing fantastic this season or the NFL might treat him like a flash in the pan. It's gunna be srs competition and we all know Brock is competitive AF, just hope he's healthy to be able to fully compete.

It's going to be really interesting to see how Brock looks with a full offensive install just for him and now that DC's have film on him and have had all off season to game plan for him/Kyle.

Will he be more robotic and hesitant? Will he leave the pocket too soon? Try to play more hero ball?

Matt Ryan and Jimmy Garoppolo took big steps back before they could fully buy in and trust the process.

I might even expect a slower start and some natural up/downs. It should be more mental than anything.

Purdy will be fine. If you play at that level as a rookie, you´re gonna be a good QB in this league.
The question is really the elbow. Will he be back at 100%?
Only Nick Mullens I think had the same type of surgery IIRC. It doesn´t seem Nick had any problems after the surgery but you never know. It´s really an empirical situation.

Jim Trotter backed up that same stance…lance had a good shot of overtaking QB1 that first off season, then he broke his finger. People bypass that as if it wasn't a big deal…in reality he has to completely change how he held the ball that first yr, which affects everything.

injuries have derailed Lance, Jimmy and thus far Brock. Sucks. I also agree, the whole Sam vs Lance thing might be a little overboard. I want Brock 100% both health wise, mentally and in football shape before tossing him out there. Go see what the kid you had so much conviction in can do before tossing him in the trash. If Lance shows up and plays well, then we have a good problem.

Baker mayfield broke the rookie TD record in 13 games back in 2018. I wouldn't consider him a good QB in this league now and that's with Hue Jackson on a bad team.

Mullens is a backup QB. It's not like he's been out there throwing 500 passes in a season since then to determine anything. Ligaments and how they heal are different for everyone. It's not a reconstruction, so it's not like he's getting new harvested ligaments that will strengthen everything. It's his same UCL that his healing on its own.

My worry is if he gets hit similar in a game and then a TJ reconstruction is needed.

The question is really the elbow. Will he be back at 100%?

So many variables and I worry about the elbow as well. I don't see any point in rushing it which is why I think he will miss the first few games.

Ultimately I want Purdy ready for the playoffs. If I could wish for anything it would be that. So part of me is wondering if rushing him back for week one would increase the odds of another injury that limits his availability in the postseason, and part of me just thinks Purdy should play as soon as he's ready because IMO he gives us the best chance to win.

My question to you is, is it fair to hope that Lance plays at least a couple weeks, possibly 4-6 weeks which improves his trade value, then Purdy takes over from there?

Obviously, I'm not going to be upset if Purdy starts every game. That would be fantastic, but I worry with our consistent injury issues at the QB position, that it could force either Trey or Sam to finish the season with no regular season reps. That's not what anyone wants from what I gather from this forum.

I just think this negative situation (Purdy being injured) could result in something positive… in that we could have our cake and eat it too. Meaning, Trey improves his trade value early in the season and Purdy gets more time to rehab and reduces the amount of hits he takes before the playoffs.

Is that fair or no?

I think there's certainly a way this happens.

-the offense could feel less efficient but still productive
-the offense takes time to gel early in the season
-we lose a game or two
-injury… even a mild one.
