How long will JimmyG retain the 49ers starting job?

I think so as well.

The biggest issue might be the year off he had because of covid. There's really no rush to play him unless Jimmy plays like crap or gets hurt. Mahomes spent his rookie season on the bench after the Chiefs traded up to get him, I don't get why Lance can't follow the same path.

listen to Kyle on Eisen today. Jimmy's the starter in 2021. there's no competition.

I think they are very comfortable with playing it back with Jimmy one more time AND having Trey as the top backup ready to take over if there is another injury with the idea being if Jimmy gets hurt it is Trey's team from that point forward. If Jimmy takes us to the playoffs he is suddenly a huge trade chip in the offseason that could net one of our lost first round picks back.

I don't put any stock into who Kyle says the starter is in May. Jimmy is the presumptive starter and no one is disputing that. They'll not switch to Lance before he's ready, but we'll see how long that conviction lasts when they see the two of them playing. There's a long time before the season starts and a lot can change.

Exactly and one of those things is durability with Jimmy.

That's been the constant against Jimmy so I'm not sure what's so funny.

Best case scenario is Jimmy playing great footbal the entire year which should boost his trade value for 2022 for a desperate team. I expect Denver, Carolina and others to be looking for a QB in 2022
Drafting Trey Lance was more about how bad CJ and Nick are than it was about whether or not Jimmy is good enough.

But if Jimmy gets hurt, it will be the last time he starts in SF.

because it has nothing to do with Kyle not seeing a competition at the position.
I'm betting Its his this year until he gets hurt. If Lance performs well Jimmy may not get his job back, if he struggles Jimmy starts as Lance continues to develop.

Which means nothing right now. Like the previous poster said a lot can still change between now and the start of the season.

We didn't spend 3 first round picks to replace the backup QB. It's only about CJ and Nick in the sense that we had to start them at all.
