I'm rooting for Watkins, and Hilliard, who's story is great, 6yrs at OSU, injury plagued, came back in 2020, didn't opt out, played his best season, I think he could take one of those backup LB spots away from Flannigan-Fowles or Gerry.

I hope he's our 3rd lb. I think he's definitely more talented then the others just needs to stay healthy

I'm not gonna put either of the 2 LBs(Hilliard and Sullivan) or Watkins on my 53 until I see them in the preseason, but from what I've read all 3 could make it, and I'm fine with that, DFF, Gerry, and even Al-Shaair scare me being backups to Warner & Dre.

Our depth is razor thin behind them. Frankly, we need to look at some pickups after waivers this preseason in my opinion.

I think Hilliard makes it if healthy. I also think our backup linebackers will have to contend with the versatility of Harris and Hufanga being able to play both safety and linebacker.

Very true. Hilliard has to be at least as good in coverage as DFF and Al Shaair. Either way I hope Hilliard and Hufanga make the team. I have a feeling Hufanga will take over the starting SS position sooner rather than later. It would be nice to see one of our safeties force a turnover for once in the last 6 years. I bet our starting safeties are close to last in the league in ints.

I agree with OTC, our LB depth is razor thin, it's why I was all for drafting 1 or 2, but we got 2 UDFAs, and yes they need to contend with Harris & Hufanag, who I believe is a lock along with Harris, both will make this team, Hufanga could become a steal of the 5th rd, and be the starting SS in 2022.

I can honestly see the team keeping 4 true LBs(Warner, Dre, Hilliard, and Al-Shaair), along with having both Harris & Hufanga being able to play LB on gamedays. Not having a true 5th LB would open a roster spot, making to keep all 5 backs, and not chance losing Mitchell off of waivers.

I think they will definitely keep 4 true lbs with Hufanga making the team for sure and Harris maybe if we don't sign Jefferson or another SS that can slide into a lb role if there's injuries or in a nickle/dime package with Warner

Honestly until this past yr I would rather have had just one good backup instead of 2 that were so so...even with kyle as OC/HC. Sure Mullie came in a few games and looked like a world beater, but he never was going to get us to game #19. So if it isn't a real talent who can come in and lite it up, I have to throw in with GM and agree. Lance and Jimmy G and pray for good health. Rosen , Sudfeld...rather keep another DL/OL/WR/CB, whatever. Now i think we just wasted good space last yr...altho we had no TALENT as back up ...and now we do. Times change, situations same. Go with our two stars.
Agreed and glad to be in that situation this year.

The only real argument I can see for keeping a 3rd QB is to groom a backup for next year under the assumption Jimmy is gone, but I'm not sure that even makes sense. Two out of Mullens, Sudfeld and Rosen should be available next offseason (or midseason this year) along with maybe Beathard so we should be able to pick up a guy or two familiar with the system, and one of them should be serviceable behind the new line for a game or two.
So the 49ers just waived 3 players. I wonder if that means they are signing more UDFA soon?

Had to get down to 90. 91 with Richburg (retirement pending).

They still need to cut 1 more to fit all 4, since Richburg won't retire till June 2nd when they don't lose cap room.
Why the heck do we have only 4 undrafted free agents? We used to have double this number last year. Does no one want to play for us?

Well, most UDFAs can see that their chances of breaking through into the team are far higher with a team with a weaker roster.

Yeah, it's going to be tough for an UDFA to crack our 90 man roster.

Hilliard has a really good chance to make the team. Good in coverage, solid speed, and versatility. Special teams should be his ticket.

Would be awesome to see him able to beat out someone of the 3 expected backups(Al-Shaair, Flannigan-Fowles, & Gerry)

Bosa's pick
