49ers have a serious problem with quarterbacks.

I mean if we want a proven championship caliber QB that can help break down film in the QB room...we could do a lot worse than Flacco.

Yea sorry 2012. I've blocked a lot of that out.

I am also saying we could do a lot worse and have done worse in the backup QB space. Can only go up when we've reached bottom.

Flacco has been injured and is obviously at the tail end of his career. He once had a big arm but I don't know what he's got left.

Niners definitely need another vet. CB. Preferably a slot guy. I'd like to see them bring back K'Waun Williams. Is there an upgrade available? Desmond King? Adoree' Jackson seems to be legit on the outside when healthy. Could it be possible to add one of these vets to the group? Are these guys asking for too much?

Time to go and get Kyle Fuller. Just released by the Bears. He would be an immediate starter opposite side of Varrett. We may need Jimmy G to restructure his contract a bit. I get the Niners don't want any dead cap money, just in case they trade him. Fuller is too good to pass up.

The center from the Raiders would have been the better choice for a long term solution. This move was a done deal the moment Mack was told he wasn't coming back. Older, cheaper and a perfect scheme fit - that's our wheelhouse, or what Paraag is comfortable signing without much resistance. This isn't a negative take, we just know Paraag has a type of player he likes: mid-tier, older or a player with some injuries who can outplay his contract. I guess by definition that is #moneyball.

No hate, it's just that you have to limit the number of those players on a team.

And it's not a poor approach IF you still draft the youth that's just as talented to be trained by the Sherman's and Mack's and Sanders' of the world.

But let's say the you pay him $6M and use a 2nd/3rd rounder. That's getting up to $8-9M with two resources used and no guarantee that rookie ever reaches Mack production and talent.

Just pay the $12M and get a known all pro C for the next 5 years. I have this philosophy for the PRIME positions in this system LT, C, ER x2, etc

That's a good plan, I would have agreed, but for Alex Mack. He knows the system, no need to train him up in training camp. He knows Kyle. He knows the protections calls (ie more than just the system, he knows about the way Kyle thinks about the system). He's also going to coach the rest of the Olinemen while on the field. He's an older player, and so his cap hit isn't that big vs a young 25 year old in the prime of his career (who *doesn't* know Kyle's system and who doesn't know Kyle and how he play calls). And, for the price of a young top of the line 25 year old center, you can additionally draft a lower round raw, but talented center that has as much potential to be a first rounder but for the raw-ness in the third or lower rounds or later to sit behind Mack for a year as your long term solution.

So did Lindsey though and he's much younger. But I do like the Mack signing. I'm definitely not EVER down on adding talent to our weakness unit (in PP).

Just kidding, I know what you meant. But even if Leflure was his coach, its not the same as being actually coached by Kyle.

I think you get a couple of advantages more than if you got just Cory Linsley. As I stated above -- I think Mack is much more experienced than Linsley. He comes cheaper. He can be a coach on this team after he retires as a player. (Hopefully that's Staley this year). In addition- Mack knows he's at the end of his career, whereas Linsley will view an added young rookie Olinemen for depth as a competitor vs an understudy in Mack's situation. That young drafted center will be 3+ years younger than Corey. As for injuries, you have two (Mack and rookie) for the price of Linsley, which means depth at a important position.

I like all the FA moves so far. Before FA started, I would have said the OL and the secondary were the greatest areas of need, followed closely by the backup QB. ShanaLynch has addressed all that. Brought TW back and signed Mack stabilize the OL. Resigned Moseley and Verrett which will be your starters at CB, Dontae Johnson was a head scratcher. I don't know what he has left in the tank, but if he is the depth piece for CB, then so be it. and they went out and got Flacco as a backup. I would have liked to see some one else like Andy Dalton. But be that as it may, Flacco should be an improvement over Mullens and Beathard, if he had to step in.

So, who to draft now? Before this round of FA signings, I would have put my money on drafting a CB with the 12th pick. Either Surtain or Farley. But Moseley and Verrett are two pretty competent CBs when they are on their game. So, do they use this pick on a position that they gave pretty covered in FA? They need a RB and probably another WR from the draft. But ShanaLynch have been pretty successful at finding good RBs that fit their system either in the late rounds or as UDFAs. SO, they are not going to waste a 12th pick on one. The WR class for this draft is not as deep as in prior years. Chase and both the Alabama WRs should be gone by the 12th pick, if not, one of the these 3 if available should be a good choice. But I don't see that happening. The drop off in WRs outside of these 3 is too steep to warrant a 12th pick. OL might be the way to go. But outside of Penei Sewell, not sure if any of the other top rated OL is a day one starter, which is who u want with the 12th pick. Slater, Darrisaw and Vera-Tucker are the rest of the top OL after Sewell, but I am not sure they can all be a starter. Spending a 12th pick on the QB of the future might be acceptable, if one of the top consensus 4 or 5 QB falls to the 12th spot. Which would be Lance, Wilson, Fields, or Jones. Lawrence will be gone with the 1st pick. But again, that is a too much to pay for a backup QB who could be playing for years behind Jimmy.

Where does that leave us? I don't think ShanaLynch will go after the BPA at 12th. We are not in the situation we were 3 seasons ago, when we had serious holes in all positions and BPA would solve one of those positional problems. I am thinking this is a trade down for more picks. Maybe into a high teens or up to mid 20s spot, and maybe pick up an extra 3rd round pick or more. If we traded out of 12th and ended up say with the 20th pick, I think one of the 3 OL mentioned above would still be around, and that is the right price to pay for an OL who may or may not be a rookie starter. With the first pick of the 2nd round, they could also get a CB.
