Realistically looking at the situation who is under center 2021?

There needs to be 10 more threads discussing QB. Niner fans are fed up with this s**t

I'm warming up a little to Stafford. He may not have any playoff wins, but he certainly can lead a team back. He had eight 4th Quarter comebacks in 2016. The interesting numbers don't stop there.

In 165 starts in his 11 year career, Stafford has 38 game winning drives. In 299 starts over 21 years in the NFL, Tom Brady has 48. The most 4th quarter comebacks he's had in an NFL season is 5.

Realistically, top odds for being the 49ers QB starting next season seem pretty much like this:

1. Jimmy G
2. Stafford
3. Watson/Rookie/Other (like Darnold)

Jimmy G seems like the most likely. Stafford is possible. Others seem like they're all equally at long-shot odds.

The simplest way to NFL success seems to be, draft a qb. Maybe hold him for a year behind a vet. Then throw him in the deep end behind the best O line you can muster. When his salary demands threaten to cause the rest of the roster to start hollowing out, trade him and then rinse and repeat.

Drafting and sitting QBs for a year isn't as popular as it once was. Many teams start these guys as rookies for several reasons.
1.They want to take advantage of the rookie contract for as long as possible.
2. Impatience. Owners and coaches are under pressure to win right away so they want to see if they drafted the right guy. If not they move on quickly.
3. Some of these guys are more ready to start than in past years. A lot of them have grown up attending QB camps run by former pros so they have some of their rough spots already ironed out.
4. More teams are running the option style college offenses where the QB doesn't have to take the snap directly from center.

On top of this, coaches are now smart enough to know that all they need to do is just tailor the offense to the QB and not vice versa as was the approach before.

I love Stafford, but the flaw in this is that Stafford has been on a Lions team who have had to make comebacks, and aren't used to being ahead for most of their games. Against Tom Brady, in NE and TB, the Patriots teams have generally been better than the Lions and usually don't have to make as much comebacks because they're usually winning.

The Lions have rarely put together a team with enough talent and balance on both sides of the line to win. When they had a decent defense the offense was bad. When Stafford had weapons like Megatron, the defense was terrible and they had no running game.

Sounds about right. Removing Jimmy isn't as easy as it appears. The entire squad loves the guy. Gotta think how Jimmy's removal from the locker room will effect the team.

Lol Brady was usually killing teams, no need for 4th quarter heroics.
I do remember Stafford in the playoffs against Dallas about 5 years ago, didn't he have the ball in the final two minutes and chance to win or tie but failed ????

Watch us trade a 1st for Stafford, and then everyone be SHOCKED when we go 9-7 and get bounced in the 1st round.

Depends on what the context is. Is our defense even gonna be as good next year? Lots of moving parts, Saleh leaving, etc.
