Because those guys were both so incredibly successful as HCs?

Richard is a very emotional guy. His sideline demeanor reminds me of Jim Harbaugh. That is not a good thing for a coordinator who needs to stay cool when things go south.

Saleh is also emotional but he is calm and collected when he needs to be.

Pass on Richard.

I think Morris will get the full-time gig in Atlanta.

Dan Quinn would seem to be in play given the past relationship with Kyle and how near they came to a ring.

My .02 worth is on Ryans. Would some of the older position coaches be willing to work with a young guy? IDK, might be some would leave with Saleh instead.

Nah I'd personally rather have Richard over Quinn if I had to choose between the two. Richard has been positively talked about from his former players about how good of a communicator he is. He has remained relevant in head coach searches the last couple of years and is well respected within league circles. The way Dallas' defense went backwards just a year after he left just kind of validates him all the more imo.

Quinn in my opinion hasn't really evolved that old Seattle cover 3 very much. Saleh has evolved the same scheme in alot less time and has surpassed Quinn as a defensive playcaller imo.

I don't really have an opinion on Ryans. He's clearly a talented position coach and will get a shot soon to be a DC. Kyle is constantly around these guys and seems to value like minded football nerds like himself. If Kyle gives Ryans the promotion I'll trust his judgement.

What 4th round picks?

Picks that the niners would get if they lose saleh. They would get one in 2020 and 2021 due to minority head coach hiring. I don't agree with it but it helps the 49ers

They are 3rds

They are so back end of the 3rd rounds that they're practically 4ths

And yet, they are still 3rds.

Many people take this glass half empty approach with picks. I agree with you. A 3rd is a 3rd and there's likely to be starting caliber players in year 1 or by year 3 available.

Thought this was about defensive coordinator. But that ship has long sailed for Lewis in particular. I'd argue that by Bengals standards, he was successful lol. With that said, his time as a coordinator has long since passed and if I were to hire Marvin Lewis, it would be in personnel. The Bengals fielded some pretty talented teams during his tenure, arguably some of the most talented in the NFL some years.

How does our current LBs and DL fit into a 3-4 scheme?

Meh. Splitting hairs

Fangio plays more 4-3 under than a true 3-4.

It doesn't affect Fred or Greenlaw much. In fact, it would likely give them more chances to shoot gaps cleanly without having to worry about OL constantly climbing to the second level.

Kinlaw can play in any scheme.

The only guy that could be impacted by the switch is Bosa, but Fangio allowed Mack to play with his hand in the dirt on money downs. I'm sure he'd do the same with Bosa.

The nice thing about Fangio is IF he's fired, he'll likely stick around with his next team until he retires(or is let go).

Oh, didn't realize that he plays more of the 4-3 now, I was so used to his 3-4 scheme when he was DC under Harbaugh. Wouldn't be a bad hire if he's let go by Denver. I just hope they don't try and move Bosa to OLB, like apparently Arizona planned on using him had they drafted him.

I would LOVE Fangio. And agree that scheme wouldn't be too different... with nickel as the base these days, few teams play the traditional 3-4.

I'm not worried about Bosa as Mack and Aldon Smith both thrived under Fangio, neither are big coverage versatile EDGE guys.

There'd be some continuity too in the secondary since Fangio mostly runs split safety and quarters looks and that's how we evolved this year on D. I'm not sure though if we currently run as much zone pattern match as Fangio though?

He and Donatell know how to coach up talented DBs and get them to shine. Eddie Jackson and Justin Simmons have really blossomed under them

I would say he plays more Seifert style Elephant 3-4. But when Miller was healthy it was more 3-4 odd.

The Elephant 3-4 doesn't shift coverage responsibilities with motions so that you have dedicated pass rushers off the edge.

The 4-3 under doesn't have a 0 tech and has a 3 tech. Vic usually has a 5-0-5.

If we made the shift 2 years ago, I would say it's no big deal because our SAM was really a 3-4 OLB and the LEO was too, now, our W9 strong side end is AA and we have off-ball LB's in Shaair and the like as our 3rd and 4th LB's.
A dark horse candidate im interested in is Ron Milus. He's DB coach with the Chargers, has served under Gus Bradley(whom Saleh served under)and has had a DB make the pro bowl in each season from 2013-2019.

Vic doesn't use a 5-0-5(actually uses mainly a base 4t-0t-4t) in nickel, which is 60% of the game. He's spent more and more time in his under/over alignments in CHI and DEN than a base okie front.

AA is a better 5tech/4tech than he is an upfield end. Either way, why are we worried about this dude? He's not good.

Shaair?! We really talking about Shaair?! This dude is JAG. Every stack LB after Fred and Dre is replaceable.

I think the strongest argument against Vic Fangio is that we don't want the best player on the team, Nick Bosa, doing anything that isn't conducive to his strengths(ie forcing him to play standing up and drop into coverage from time to time). Is Vic an old man set in his ways? Who knows. Although he was a little flexible with Mack, he still forced him to play standing up(not such a big deal for Mack) and drop into coverage, which drove Bears' fans absolutely insane. Some of their Tweets from that time are hilarious.

Brandon Staley is running Fangio's stuff in LA, and he's done a good job of allowing Aaron Donald to be himself.
