When we finally signed Austin this year I was so happy that we've actually have a threat for the first time since Ted Ginn Junior as a punt returner or kick returner. I am so sick and tired of our front office completely neglecting this part of our team. Just draft a return man as an undrafted free agent or a fifth sixth or seventh round pick and finally be done with it. How hard is that? Damn
They drafted the all time college returner lol. But I do agree they need to try again.
I am well aware that they drafted the all-time leader in punt return touchdowns, he broke DeSean Jackson's record. It's also fair to assume that when they drafted Pettis he wasn't going to be a returner because starting receivers rarely are. However, I'm still baffled how that didn't work out for Dante after he lost his starting job. It's easy to waste a very late draft pick on a punt return/kick return specialist. If special-teams is an important phase of the game I don't see how they don't keep trying every year until they find one that's acceptable and does more than just fair catch.
I believe the fair catch thing is more about the coach than the returner. As someone pointed it out, all of our returners do this.
