Let me be very clear. The 2024 offseason was a disasterclass in asset management by the 49ers front office. Paraag went into the negotiation hellbent on getting a win after the Bosa negotiation the previous year, which was affected by previous negotiations Paraag had been run over by the players (Deebo, Warner, Trent, Kittle), Shanahan, and Lynch. In 2024, he got ran over by CMC (or are we still pretending he didn't hold out for a few days before the team caved?). He got ran over by Aiyuk+Shanahan. Then he had to make things right with Trent. Yes, it was a contract negotiation but the people that want to lay everything at the feet of Aiyuk refuse to accept the fact that it was Paraag that forced Lynch to try and trade Aiyuk pre-draft. That it was Paraag that ghosted Aiyuk from the May meeting until the July meeting requested by Aiyuk. That it was Lynch that refused to trade Aiyuk after calling a dozen+ teams trying to flip the Steelers 3rd round pick for a replacement X WR. He wasn't asking for a market resetting contract at any point. The 49ers made the dumb mistake of letting him talk to other teams pre-draft, validating his self-perceived market value.

I don't have to paint the 49ers in a bad light. They put the bad light on themselves. I'm just acknowledging it. Did Aiyuk screw up? Absolutely. This has been covered plenty in the last few months. I even talked about it. There were alternative paths Aiyuk could have taken that was explained to him by his agent and others. He made the choice to go this route. My point is that he wasn't the only one who screwed up here. The team leaking they quit on him while he was recovering post-surgery shouldn't be ignored.

The reason why Paraag isn't publicly accountable for those decisions is because Lynch is the face of the front office. How many times have you read that Lynch is negotiating contracts? Lynch really isn't hands on in the negotiations. Paraag has been taking care of contracts since the 2000s. Lynch has talked about the process and how Paraag would provide him updates. We've all heard the stories of Lynch having to get involved at the end of the Bosa negotiation. How Kyle had to get involved at the end of the Aiyuk and the 2021 Williams negotiation. How often big contract negotiations go into the late summer. Lynch tried to give Paraag his shine for the Jimmy G negotiation but Lynch ended up being the focal point, because again, he's the face of the front office.

Whenever ShanaLynch wanted to make a big splash, they did consult Paraag to see if the moves made financial sense, but he never really had veto authority.

For clarity, you're preaching to the choir here (in your response to my questions). I'm using the questions as a rhetorical tool to help people figure out the situation for themselves. Look at them in a similar fashion to the type of questions an investigator would ask a target.

My entire involvement in this conversation is because of my concern about the 49ers front office structure, though some would paint it as a defense of Aiyuk.

Even more simply put, I don't think it's a good thing we have an unaccountable ownership proxy (for lack of better words) at the top of football ops. We were supposed to have 'grown and learned' from this…
