Hey all, long time no see. :D Straight to it. 1) QBs: Jimmy was a bit of a mixed bag. Airmailed a few and then had some really nice 3rd down plays. Best play by far was the pass to Goodwin with Pressure in his face. CJ was so-so. I know a lot of people critical of his performance, but I'll wait a few weeks before making much of a comment on it. Mullens looked far better than I expected, but I think we need to pump the brakes on him taking over as the #2 QB. CJ has Regular Season Game experience and Mullens has just flashed for the very first time against guys who likely won't be NFL football players. That's not to say he's not any good, just sayin we should slow down a bit on him. 2) Reuben Foster: Woah. Tavon Austin ran in the 4.2s at the combine. Reuben had an angle and the ball was a bit under thrown…but WOW. The speed to get there, knock it away, and most importantly recognize the open man and get on his horse and get there. He also made a nice tackle with Tartt on the sideline to prevent a first down (tho they got it on the next play anyway). Reuben looks every bit the Superstar LB. I just hope he can stay out of trouble. 3) 7th round picks: What's up with the 49ers with 7th rounders? Jullian Tayler looks like a player that MIGHT make Arik Armstead expendable. He's got power, he's got pass rush moves. He looks like he could be a player. Ritchie James? WR looks a whole lot more crowded than it did last year but they may have to carve out a spot for him to make the team. Add to that Adrian Colbert from last year and Trent Brown from a few years ago? What's up with the scouts in the 7th round? For that matter, the 5th round ain't bad either (DJ Reed, George Kittle, Trent Taylor). 4) Joe Williams: I'm starting to lose interest in Joe Williams. He was a guy I was really excited about last year after the draft but man he just doesn't quite seem to have it. He's a bit stiffer than I thought. Doesn't have much wiggle. If he gets daylight look out and in fairness the line had some serious blocking issues…but I just didn't see from him what I want to see. If Breida is OK, how do you cut Mostert for Joe? If you cut Joe you KNOW he'll be on someone else's roster. I guess its a good problem to have. I'll surely keep watching tho. 5) WR: So….Garcon, Goodwin, Pettis, Taylor, Bourne, James? No room for Aldrick Robinson, Aaron Burbridge, or Victor Bolden? There are going to be some WRs the Niners release that are going to get signed to active rosters with other teams. 6) Injuries: That was sickening. I was at the game and in a position to see most of those injuries and it really sucks to see front line starters go down to injury in the preseason. Kittle? He jammed that elbow into the ground pretty hard so makes me wonder of he popped it out of the joint. I hope not (update: Just read no structural damage and no too serious. Whew). Solomon? That was scary. He was totally motionless. Malcolm Smith? Didn't see him get hurt but saw him walking off the field. That guy is snake-bit with injuries. Gilliam? TV didn't capture it but from a distance I initially thought it was Laken Tomlinson (Gilliam is 76, Tomlinson 75) but he was on his knees sitting up and started drifting sideways…IE his equilibrium was wacked and he was falling down. Breida? Jeez….can we stop with the damn injuries? 7) Pettis: I really like the guy and he's a really bright kid, but yesterday there were times he looked lost. Clear miscommunications or bad throws/routes on several occasions. I don't know if it was on CJ or on him but I tend to think its him as he's spent far less time in the offense. As I said, he's a bright kind so I'm sure he'll get it down and he was able to show something with that deep route, but IMO it looks like he's got some work to do. 8) Pass Rush: To be fair, they ran really vanilla and a lot of the work they've been doing in the off-season RE: Scheming pressure wasn't utilized yesterday. We really won't know until week 1 what the pass rush is gonna look like….but…. I really hope they are at least investigating #52 is Silver and Black via trade. He's be a fantastic LEO and might even get singled up with DeForest and Solomon on the line. Might be unrealistic, but I hope they are looking into it. 9) Ward: Rough night for him but I really think that TD was a fluky kinda play. He was in position and inexplicably slowed down. It was almost as if he thought he had perfect coverage and the ball wasn't going there so eased up, looked back, and was surprised to see the ball in the air. It shouldn't happen but that is easily correctable and a learning experience. I'm not really concerned. 10) Finally: Thank God. Niner Football is back. :-D EDIT: 11) Run Game: Forgot one. :) I'm not concerned. It looked bad at times...but we have a Shanahan at the helm. They'll get it figured out. Rookie RT, the 2 guys likely to starte at RG aren't playing yet. They'll be fine.

WRs looked good for the most part. It's a good battle for that #6 spot. Pettis looked a bit lost at times, but he definitely has a lot of ability. I would have liked to see him in the PR game more.

RBs all looked pretty mediocre and no one stood out this game to me.

On defense, I liked the pressure that Buckner and Thomas were getting while they were on the field together. Thomas's injury initially looked a lot worse, so I'm glad he is ok.

Overall, it's just one preseason game. I'm not going to read too much into it.

A big part of Jimmy's QB problems was the inability of the OLine to make the blocks needed for the run game. Still, he threaded some needles in there and move the ball. I'm not worried about Jimmy at all. 5-0 last year says he's the last thing to worry about on this team.

As for CJ. I'm a bit disappointed he's not figured out to put some touch on those throws to the RB or TE flaring out at the LOS. Those tipped passes (as NY85 said) he had problems with last year. He *still* has problems on, it today unfortunately.

As for defense, my real worry for this team is edge rusher. The only edge rusher I saw that did anything was Pita, and that was in the 4rth qtr. The interior D Line is impressive with Blair, Day and Taylor. I think ShanaLynch got a windfall with Julian Taylor.

Relatively positive news for the #49ers on all injury fronts. Neither shoulder injuries for TE George Kittle or RB Matt Breida reveal any structural damage. DL Solomon Thomas and OT Garry Gilliam are in concussion protocol. All should be ready for Week 1 of the regular season.

In addition, LB Eli Harold's knee injury isn't serious and turned out to be nothing more than a bruise. The severity of LB Malcolm Smith's hamstring injury is still to be determined. But again, the #49ers seemed to have Matrix'd a handful of bullets after just one exhibition.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I felt like Ward reached towards that hammy after giving up the TD. Reminded me of Revis when Moss made that 1 handed catch. But I didn't record the game and the highlight wasn't that good. I hope he can at least contribute to that 8 mil he's earning

Another positive from this is that the rookies and the backups to the injured are going to be playing more in the next preseason game. I'm looking forward to Dwelly Wick (if he's healthy) and Saxton at TE. I'm looking forward to more of Taylor, Blair and Day at 3-tech and big end. Maybe rookie Gonzalez and Toran at guard? More Fred in place of Malcolm? Pita at WLB? In other words, this is a real opportunity to the backups to make a big move for their chance to make the 53 or as a possible starter.

I feel asleep.....and missed the last 10 minutes (gametime). Did they actually run sprint option? On the highlights I saw the clinching TD and 2 pointer weren't Sprint option.

I thought it was illegal to call/text the sideline during a game. Didn't the Browns get fined for something like that? Also, just stick to paying the bills, Jed.

Agree. I'm pretty sure he was calling the sprint right option against zone.

Anyway, I hope he just watches football and not meddle in any of ShanaLynch's business. His sole job right now is to just sign checks.

Nah he just wasn't giving any effort. Didn't even put his mouth guard in for that play.

It's a reference to the play Bill Walsh called for The Cafch.
