The only problem is that if we keep a non-rush BE that means you need to find a SAM/ER (at least) who can rush next to him in nickel (or on that strong side) and that makes you more predictable compared to an every-down BE who can rush on any down. Dumervil did find some success in that role.

So would they have to eat that $9M or can they renegotiate a LT contract and lower that 2019 APY?

They can extend him and lower his $9m salary.

Has anyone ever asked you a question about the salary-cap you didn't know? Real question...

Not lately, maybe early on I had some difficulties, but no longer, know pretty much 99% of what's asked.

On topic for 2019 draft, want Nick Bosa, but someone like Josh Allen, or Rashan Gary would be a nice alternative.
NC, let's just assume we were to take ER at #1 and #2 pick. I don't see any good/great ER making it to FA, so....just exactly how many of :
1 OT
2 LBs
3-4 DBs
#1WR
could we conceivably get in FA? Sure if there happened to be a solid ER, we FA him. But if not, how many of the above do you think we could realistically snag in FA? That is either 7 or 8 players at high desirability slots. Could we conceivably bag as many as 4? more? If we took ERs at #1 and #2, that still leaves 3 picks and if we could nail down 4 starters from the above... well, we possibly could swing it. Thots? I sure hope we can get an FA ER, but frankly just don't see it.

IMO we need to come away with a LEO(ER), a #1/2 WR, a FS, a SS, Developmental LT, SAM LB, WILL LB all this offseason,I can see the free agent market being defensive dominated this year for us, I doubt Clowney gets to FA, HOU would be dumb to not tag him. I'm not keen on overpaying someone like Shane Ray or Dante Fowler, when they couldn't get their 5th yr options picked up. Earl Thomas would be nice, but injury history is an issue, if people get pissed when Garcon misses 8 games, how will they feel is Earl misses half the season? I haven't looked at FAs too much, I like Tyrell Williams of LAC, but not a true #1 WR, we need to draft one, N'Keal Harry of ASU would be nice.

Totally believe that. You're always on point and a huge resource in here. Duh.

PS: Loved Jason_OTC's podcast. He pretty much nailed the trends I've been noting for a while. It created great discussion. Did you give him all those speaking points? Ha

Thanks NC.

I haven't checked Jason's Podcast out on the 49ers yet. I didn't give him anything to talk about, he's pretty damn good too, for a Jets fan lol.

It was terrific if you get a chance to listen to it.

AB is there a way we can negotiate and hold rights to Armstead or would he have the option of telling us to go kick rocks and we might, might be forced to cut him. Just curious.

Correct, we have to decide whether to GTD his $9M on 1st day of league year, he could tell us F Off on a redo, but I doubt he'd do so, if we offer a 3-4 yr deal, worth good money to him, he;d be wise to take it. No way of holding his option, plus if cut, we wouldn't get a comp pick as he wouldn't be a true UFA on an expiring contract.

If we get $65-$67 million in cap space - then what should we do with it? Go on a splurge? On who?

That's the fun part! You get to create your own off season plan.
I know people want to spend money this offseason, but I'd keep Celek, solid TE, great blocker, we have our #1 elite TE already, worth the money to keep Celek.

Got it. Thank you! I can totally see us doing this particularly given I think Mitchell might be well past his prime and in decline.

Agreed, Mitchell is likely gone, it was fine keeping him this year as we didn't have anyone else better than him and DJ Jones as NTs, we had our top 8or 9 DL, all made it, but in 2019 he would struggle with Jones, Day,and new guys.
New plan now that Bosa is off the board.

Free Agency/Draft Retooling Plan:

Coaching Changes: Todd Bowles or Ed Donatell hired as the Defensive Coordinator.

***This plan is based on Robert Saleh being retained***

Notes:
  • Jimmy Garoppolo will only count $20M this year.
  • Do not resign DeForest Buckner. He's only counting $5.79M in 2019 and then we can exercise his 5th year option ($10M) and then Franchise Tag him cheap ($14-$16M) since he plays on the interior. No rush.
  • Solomon Thomas adds around 5-10 pounds and gets back to training inside at 3T/1T to pair with DeForest Buckner at 1T/3T.
  • Last year, the FO paid out $87.8M which included extending our own and signing free agents to these core players. This total also included $37M to Jimmy Garoppolo.

2018 Free Agency Spendings:
Jimmy Garoppolo $37,000,000
Weston Richburg $9,260,000

Garry Gilliam $2,450,000
Brock Coyle $2,050,000
Shon Coleman $658,000
Mike Person $630,000

2019 Salary Cap: We're projected to have $68M (including rollover) before the following cuts.

Free Agency: OverTheCap was used for free agency $ projections.
ER Trey Flowers 25 NE 89.7 #2 ED $17M APY - Franchise tagging him would cost over $17M and NE may want to lock up LT Trenton Brown also who won't be cheap. A saturated market could bring the cost down some but pairing him on the weak side at LEO with SAM/ER in Preston Smith on the strong side, suddenly we have an every-down strength.
RG Mark Glowinski 27 IND 71.8 #14 G $10M APY - The RG behind one of the very best OL's in the game protecting Andrew Luck with excellent depth in Mike Person.
SAM/ER Preston Smith 26 WAS 79.4 #16 ED $9M APY - A real 6'5" 265 4.71 SAM who can cover some (Fred Warner 4.64), play through the strong side and provide actual edge rush who rarely has to come off the field.
ZWR Quincy Enunwa 26 71.1 #55 WR $8M APY - WCO 6'2" 225 4.25 40-time big-bodied ZWR who takes over Kendrick Bourne's role.
WILL Jordan Hicks 26 PHI 72.6 #19 LB $7M APY - Veteran MIKE who moves to space at WILL to pair with Fred Warner and Preston Smith. Will learn both spots. 4.68 speed with coverage range.
BE Arik Armstead 25 SF 79.9 #16 ED $6M APY - AA is resigned to a 4-year $24M deal.
LCB Rashaan Melvin 29 OAK 56.9 #92 CB $4M APY - Veteran CB depth who fits our prototype to compete with Witherspoon and Moore.
RG Mike Person 30 SF 75.5 #6 G $4M APY - Reward our own and Mike Person will help Mark Glowinski get up to speed and provide excellent depth.
XWR John Brown 28 BLT 68 #55 $4M APY - Kyle finds some speed depth behind Goodwin who can also play the slot.
Special Teams - PK Robbie Gould ($3.5M APY); P Bradley Pinion ($2.5M APY); RB Raheem Mostert ($1.2M APY); WILL Elijah Lee ($1M APY) & SAM Mark Nzeocha ($800K APY) - Reward our own.

NC, you're definitely setting yourself up for disappointment with that FA wishlist lol. I think they'll go hard after one marquee free agent this offseason: Earl Thomas.
