So it looks like the Niners are top 5 in cap spending. That's crazy to me I thought they'd be towards the bottom. I'm not sure where all the money is going other than Garropolo and Juice with big contracts. I guess Garçon, McKinnon and Richburg all got pretty large contracts as well. Kind of funny how with the way the zone talks about how cheap the Yorks are one would think the Niners would be fielding a team for cheap and not spending top 5 on total salary for the year

Yup, and $37M did go to JG and we're still top 5. We spent over $87M last year.

You touched on a critical point. Check out the podcast or my cliff notes in Post #23675 for more info: https://www.49erswebzone.com/forum/niners/187898-john-lynch-49ers-gm/page1580/

It nails your last point.

Cap spending vs effective cap spending.
It's better to have one, high-priced, dependable, solid playmaker than 3 so-so/good players who are paid at the highest end of their market value but all contracts may add up to the contract of 1.

Yeah, at lowered-value positions like FB, RB, LB, etc. Another trick is to justify not spending for high end players by claiming you'll have to pay your own big bucks soon...Trenton Brown was used, DeForest Buckner.

He was only on the books this year. He's gone unless they resign him outright.

Edge, corner, LB, big wide receiver, offensive tackle. I don't care what order they address these postions as long as they get them filled. With only 5 picks we will need free agency to really help this year. Maybe we find a couple more UDFA's like Breida.

big wide receiver

That's something the fans see as a need, not Kyle. I've yet to hear Kyle say he needs a big receiver, and judging by who he's brought in through free agency and the draft over the last two years, I wouldn't hold my breath for one.

The reality is that the traits Kyle wants in his WRs are rarely found in big receivers.

That might explain why they struggle to score TD's in the red zone. Other than Kittle they don't have a big receiver to throw to in the tight spaces of the end zone. Hard to throw the ball up high or do the deep corner fade with all those little guys. Maybe Kyle prefers field goals.
all in on signing Earl Thomas! do it
OTC has the 49ers getting a 6th rd comp pick.If true, that would give them six picks in the draft.

This is probably 100% accurate. But I wonder if this snap shot of snaps might indicate otherwise. He uses Bourne (our bigger WR) a ton in run blocking, the screen game and in the RZ.

Dante Pettis X - 61
Kendrick Bourne Z - 43
Marquise Goodwin Z - 24

He might be Lynch's long lost biological son, hence many chances

Why would we cut Blair? He's played well. Also Garcon's 2019 year is an option year, if they decline they only save like $1.2M, Smith's number would be post June 1, meaning we don't get the cap room till June 2nd. Remember those smaller cuts don't count much as the top 51 count, and someone will take their spot making the same amount.

That's how I'm reading it. If I'm reading this right. From a financial standpoint, letting go of Garcon saves 1.2 mil this off-season. It saves 6.5 if letting him go the following.
