Meanwhile...Jimmie Ward.
We could eat his $8.5million but the staff must not think there is anyone else with more potential than Ward when he is healthy.

If Kyle were willing to admit his mistake with Joe Williams, why would he not cut Ward if he didn't honestly feel he was worth keeping?

So many doubting Thomas' this year! We haven't been watching TC practices with the coaches so there is not way of knowing why these guys were selected and others released. Not being healthy seems a good reason to cut someone unless they are head and shoulders above the competition. Ward, for instance, has value at CB, SS and FS. Other, younger, safeties who were released may not have much flexibility when it comes to positions. Also, there may be some guys they are trying to slip either to the practice squad or to resign after rosters are finalized and some are put on various injury lists. If you think a team will grab on player but not another...guess which one is released and, hopefully, resigned?

And...who have they discussed resigning with before cut downs? McNichols? Williams? Or will they go after a RB cut by another team?

OK, I just recall almost all of his runs in between the tackles; not many he's going to be stretching and breaking off outside.

That just means that's where his read took him. Outside zone doesn't mean the play has to go outside. The first read may lead the RB there, but it doesn't always. I think the "outside" term throws people off. Alex Gibbs called it wide zone. That name is more apt.

A few outside zone plays vs IND:

Morris became arguably the best pure outside zone runner in the league after Arian Foster retired.

You think perhaps they didn't show much outside running in preseason for a...reason? LOL!

Thanks Hero! It still looked inside the hash marks or just outside but I know what you mean.

I doubt it. That was one of the big reasons we went with McKinnon over Hyde and McGlinchey over Brown...for outside zone and in particular, outside the T reads. I'm sure this coaching staff wanted to get McGlinchey acclimated on both and in this particular, in Kyle's scheme.

Matt Maiocco

WR Aaron Burbridge, OL JP Flynn and FB Malcolm Johnson were waived/injured yesterday. Those players cleared waivers and revert to the #49ers' injured reserve list.
Is this the thread that will tell us if we pick up someone new?

I was just getting ready to update the OP. You're on it, as always.

Yeah...if you see it before us, post it here and I'll update the OP as we go (year-round).

Did we ever get confirmation that Magnuson and Harris went on IR officially?

Are my expectations to high thinking they will bring in another RB for the McKinnon loss?

And if they did bring in a rookie, wouldn't he need time to learn this complicated system?

Good questions. I can only speculate like you but this one is 50/50. We have two open spots on the roster right now. If we get a RB, it will certainly be one with good receiving skills and great lateral quickness/speed. Kyle's offense is certainly challenging but if you know how to zone, it's mostly about finding that hole, putting your foot in the ground and going. That hole may come early or late in the reads.

NC...you seem to be overthinking this preseason. Too much negativity. Every year there are players who get injured and a team is lucky to escape devastating injuries. If Garoppolo was injured it would be devastating. I can't think of any other single player who comes close to that impact, so the team is lucky. The Shanahans have created great offense with RBs who might not succeed elsewhere and RBs aren't the most difficult position players to find. Nor do they require as much time learning the offense.

So in this pre-championship year (close to getting to an elite status) we should relax and enjoy the development of young players like DJ Jones, Thomas, Foster, Warner, Pettis and perhaps even Mostert.
Man...I'm REALLY depressed about McKinnon. Seeing a TERRIBLE passrush in the preseason and our #1 RB going down is a real wet blanket to start the season. Glad we didn't trade for Mack!

At this point...an 8-8 season would be pretty fantastic. Brick by brick, I guess?

Maybe next year we'll finally get lucky and have a healthy team?
