Apparently so. LOL
Desperation in that we have 7 days until the season starts and our glaring talent holes just got bigger and we're down to 51 players. This is a very complex and intricate offense and Kyle, now has to rework the entire philosophy that was originally built around McKinnon's game and skill set...exploiting the mis-matches (adding an outside zone and a passing game). Now, we're back to Hyde-hour. It will be all inside zone again (predictable) with Morris and poor pass catching ability and zero outside zone. This offense works off the play action and forcing defenses to wear out laterally and hesitate reading run or pass and being non-predictable (run both run and pass plays from the same formations and personnel). Morris was exhausted after playing one half of football. Now he's got to tote the rock and be the bell cow for 16 games? Yeah, there's a reason why Kyle was scared s**tless that McKinnon tore his ACL. And this is why.
So, yeah, desperation for Kyle. He's now got to reshape the offensive philosophy and redo his game plan for Minnesota within a few days. And if we bring in another RB, he's going to have to learn a very complex offense and that is a major uphill battle. Breida has a history of shoulder injuries. He runs so hard and has gotten better inside and I hope he's worked on his hands. He can run some outside zone but again, that will be more predictable with him in there. Morris and Breida are both pretty average at pass protection as well.
Desperation in the pass rush department. Lynch went full Baalke and claimed he went in aggressively (prudent) and lost out d/t the prudent. OK, he tried. Like Baalke, he was in the race but couldn't close. Fine...you win some and you lose some. Unfortunately, the long list of draftee ER's we were tied to over the past 2 years is long (and many are certain to be better than Marsh), we did not move up for an ER in the draft, and in fact, got rid of our best ER from last year (who was used sparingly anyhow for more run defense) and cut the one FA we did bring in. Now we don't even have depth at SAM/ER and LEO. And without a great pass rush, that secondary is going to have to hold up and never get dinged up. So much is riding on the health of Sherman and Ward. Scary.
SS. Marcell Harris hasn't taken a snap and will be placed on I.R. per Lynch. T. Williams went down and injury settled and Chancellor James was cut early, and Powell late. We literally, have zero depth at SS behind Tartt who has his own injury issues. And if Colbert goes down? Does anyone trust Ward here...to stay healthy?
The rest of the team is looking good though.
QB: The plateau of BeatHard is offset by the expansive growth of Garoppolo in this offense
FB: Juice with a year's growth
TE: Kittle has to stay healthy but Wick could add to the run game
WR: Most versatile group we have and two deep with identical skill sets are each of the 3 spots
OL: Same unit that started all pre season is the same that will start week 1 but with better depth now
DL: The interior is insanely talented and deep and young. ER is horrendous.
LB: Appears much more diverse and talented and deep esp. when Foster comes back
CB: Obviously, if Sherman can regain form and make it through 16 games, we're golden. The depth behind it is young and developing and pretty raw though but it's a whole lot better than Dante Johnson and Rashard Robinson starting.
