I'm here, bad move to front load a deal like this, $45M of our remaining $59M is a bad idea, if we're going to contend, ad as people want us to bring in FAs, we need all the cap room we can get. So giving him a $45M roster bonus is bad, as that could be used to extend Garoppolo with a signing bonus, plus add 3 more FAs, plus we have $60M for 2018 already.

I have to update that after Robinson trade and Redmond release.
Good to know. Thank you

This is why I asked for a capologists or you AB.

it is my undertstanding we do have
1. 59 million cap room in 2017, the remaining 8 games of this season and
2. 60 million cap room in 2018 so 119 million in extra cap space
3. The only way to hamstring the team is to sign a mega deal with no outs with the guaranteed or dead money coming over 5 years, if he sucks, the team has less cap space in the future.
4. The team HAS to commit to this qb for a minimum of 3 seasons, right??
5. If you front load the contract, you get the distraction out of the way in 2017 moving forward, his cap hit is LESS is 2018, 2019 2020 so the Niners WILL have more room to be competitive to bring in for FA's.

Either way I am happy he is here, I just think Jimmy will sign a deal with lots of guaranteed money and payment up front. It is all psycology

That's if we lock him before having to throw down the franchise tag. If you do what Washington did and tag him the ball is now in Jimmy's court because he can leverage that 22, 34 million guaranteed against you.

This is true, I hope the can get something done this yr.... something Like Tannehill got 4 yrs $77 million $45 million guaranteed seems fair.

They could even do something like Bradford got 2 yrs $35 million and $22 million guaranteed, he outplays that contract he can hit the jackpot after those two yrs only being 27.

I really don't want it to be some drawn out BS contract dispute, but I also don't want to give him the bank based off a couple games. Hopefully his agent (Don Yee) is on the same page as Lynch. I don't think Yee is known as a cutthroat agent.

I will tell you from what I've seen the 49ers don't give out big GTD money at signing, they use date guarantees on base salaries.

If we were to give him a huge roster bonus it would hinder us in the offseason. I've never seen any team give any player that kind of bonus in one year that counts in the same year in full.

The team can easily sign Garoppolo to a deal that has prorations and has an easy out, they did it with Kaepernick, and several others over the years.
I know one thing....we're not letting Garoppolo get away from us unless we don't want him here.

The deal will get done and as long as he's not going to be paid like a top 5 QB I'll be happy with the deal.

We're going to pay him no doubt but I don't think he's going to get a ludicrous contract. Not after the Osweiler fiasco.

NE wasn't going to pay him crazy money to be a backup...

Yup. I could see a franchise perhaps next year but there is no way he is leaving anytime soon given what the Niners gave up and his upside. My guess is a long term deal will get done.

I wouldn't worry too much about it right now because it's premature. SF has just acquired the guy which is to say all they've got on him is limited NFL game tape and the word of another organization. I think this deal is great for SF because it amounts to a try before you buy and it STILL doesn't preclude them from cutting bait and going after Cousins. Highly unlikely, mind, you, but a possibility.

Money. The 49ers have the most cap room of any team in the NFL and somehow teams have been able to manage the contracts of multiple superstars just fine. If everything checks out with JimmyG then lets assume the 49ers make an offer. What would the amount be? He's not Tom Brady, nor Russell Wilson, nor Matt Ryan or even Kirk Cousins, so the dollar amount is likely to be below those guys. I like the idea of a 2-3 year deal for both sides because it gives the 49ers a reasonable out if it all goes to sh__ as well it gives JimmyG the ability to cash in later. In other words if the 49ers get a good starting QB out of this then I'm not concerned one bit.
What tags could we use on him when the season is over, and what do we get if he signs away after we use a tag? Like there's a transition tag, and a franchise tag, maybe 1 more? Exclusive tag? Anyways, what tags are there where if we apply it to him, and he signs else where, we get some draft pick compensation? Doesn't the franchise tag get us 2 first round picks if he signs away, or is that the transition tag? AB give me the low down on the tags please, and if you see us using one of them on him.
