I was born in 1979 so my earliest memories are in that '87 and on time frame. When did people start to buy in to Joe being the guy. I'd imagine it would have been halfway thru '81 but do you recall when this happened.

Bill's second year they started out 3-0. We got excited, but they lost a bunch of games after that before finally finishing 6-10. This was when Bill started to establish Montana as the starting QB. It was also the season of up to the time the greatest comeback in NFL history with the win over the Saints. Everyone could sense something was changing, as the 49ers were very competitive in almost every game. Optomism was high. And then came the great draft of Lott, Williamson, and Wright the following year. The play of Dwight Hicks. And the signing of Fred Dean. And the Superbowl.
So yeah, I'm holding out hope that lightning can strike again.

Uh, yeah. 3 straight NFC Championship games in there as well. Maybe he's talking Dog years.

Any recollection of what the Bay Area media was saying up to the midseason point about the team? From what I have understood, the 79 team was putting up points and yards (respectable numbers), but not winning because the defense was awful. Is that a fair assessment?

Hey, any winning that wasn't done with class doesn't count.

Media at that time was print basically. Pretty decent coverage overall, although Glenn Dickey of the Chronicle was the Kawakami prick of his day. Lowell Cohn was just getting his start in the Bay Area.
