They are improving in small areas, it's the massive amount of penalties that concerns me. That's coaching. Undisciplined, bad technique.
In ways they are. A much better offensive system in place and the defense by default is better. The main problems are injuries, which we can't really stop cause thats football, and the penalties are concerning. plus for 3 straight games we've face the best front 7s in the nfl and were going to face 2 of them again later in the season.

Penalties and super young players tend to go hand in hand. You have a lot of guys all amped up, looking to make plays and prove themselves and it gets out of hand. Good coaching means that there is a noticeable decrease in penalties and mental errors towards seasons end. If the penalties are still happening at the same rate in December, then I'll be concerned.
There is too much change to compare this team to the 49ers of 2016. There is not much stock one can put in a game, for instance, in Seattle this year, versus last year...or any year prior. There are far too many variables to come to any sort of acceptable conclusion.

The best you can do so far, is see what mistakes happened in week 1, and see how they were fixed in subsequent weeks. Then compare week 2. And so forth. On paper, this team is 27th in points per game, but that doesn't mean anything, because I imagine after week 1 the Patriots were like 30th in points per game (probably 31st, I only recall the Colts allowing more points).

Even week 3 versus the Rams was a glaring example of what happens when people take things out of context. When you fail to consider the whole picture, you are bound to be let down or proven incorrect.

I think you definitely see flashes of brilliance...followed by boneheaded plays...nature of the beast with a young team. One would need to identify what is meant by "improving." Do you mean wins? Then no, they are not. Do you mean executing assignments? Then yes and no. Do you mean coaching? Yes and no. Etc. Etc.

The one thing that is clear, no question about it, is the heart this team is showing. They fight until the end. I think Hyde's carry on Thursday night, around the three yard line, where he slipped, but then got up and fought his butt off, for basically, 36 inches...that shows the heart. That fight has me optimistic. I think this season will show they are improved. But, for now, it's too early to definitively make a sound judgement.

I think on defense we've seen some improvement, specifically on the front seven. Now, we've got to start working on the offensive side of the ball, with a FQB, WR and OL.
Slowly but yes
Baby steps but yes, and 3 games in can at least say there hasn't been a game yet where it looked like some guys just stopped competing.
Unlike the Baalke era, we are losing with young talent. We'll get better, but it's going to take a few years. Our D looked good for two weeks, but looked like garbage on Thursday. Our offense showed the can move the ball.
Yes. I think there has been great improvements in certain areas.

I think the defense is much better. I'm not really worried about their Thursday night performance. It's pretty much what I expected from this young team. They played a hell of a game against Seattle and they were obviously tired and thin on the depth chart. A lot of mental mistakes. I think the next Rams game will be better with a week to prep. This team is just not built for these stupid Thursday games.

I may be one of the few but I like the defensive scheme. The hybrid 4-3 4-4 is great. It is effective. We just are lacking talent and that will be fixed soon. Once Foster is healthy and back I think we will start seeing it.

The team seems to play with more grit and that has to be because of the change in atmosphere.

On the O Side:
We have a lot of holes to fill especially on the O-Line. Center and RG especially. I like this Tomlinson kid and want to see more. He could be a nice fit. He's new though.
Brown is young and shows at time. Definitely will get there.. I hope.
Time to start looking at a replacement for Staley too. He's showing his age a lot, & seems to get beat a lot more than he should be.

Would be nice to see the WR's & TE catch the ball more consistently.

Thin at the RB spot. I really like Barkley and he would be fun to watch as a Niner. I would love to see Hyde play a full season.

Obviously Hoyer is not a long term solution but he's the perfect QB to get us until we upgrade at that spot. He's been tossed around before so he should have the mental strength to endure the sh-tstorm.

Even though we haven't won it's been more enjoyable to watch than it has been the last two years
No question.

Thursday night games are weird so let's see if our defense gets back closer to the first two weeks and let's see if the offense is sparked a bit and plays closer to 20+ points a game now.
Not until we win 3 games
Whats the deal.. f**k around and win the next two then tank the whole year or what
Little by little, offense finally gets things going. Defense just needs to be consistent.

Yeah, the 2 defenses that looked even better than us after two weeks in Carolina and Seattle just gave up almost a combined 800 yards and 70 points.

We good...as long as we get back to playing closer to week 1 and 2, defensively and the offense comes up to average.

I think the defense on Thursday will be the norm until they get healthy
