No way someone will take that deal and give us back anything, we'd get back a player who will likely end up being cut by us.

Those 2018 and 2019 are injury GTDs for now, and fully on those dates, so if he ends up being injured in season, and still on April 1, then he's GTD that.

Good point! He's not a typical WCO TE so I don't see them keeping him, and trading him for a player you will cut is not a bad move, even if they agree to pay part of his salary this year. They have so much cap space to carry over it won't impact them going forward.

That's where I am at with him. If Shanahan absolutely doesn't want him, then we might as well try to save any or as much $$$ as we can by getting rid of him. I know wee have a ton of $$$ but every bit counts. Personally I hope McDonald does good in pre season, and we keep him. Paulsen can be here to teach all the way up until final cuts, assuming McDonald shows he can fit the mold of TE that Shanny wants/needs.
Vance is over paid, no one will pick up that contract. Simples.

I'm not so sure about this one yet as we haven't really run a traditional WCO except under Geep where Vance had his most success.

If traditional, he'll practice route running religiously, catching, finding soft holes, RAC focused, etc.

Not to mentioned, he'd be utilized fur what he does best by running underneath routes and sitting down in holes (his ability to catch and turn up field quickly is nice) and he's a load to bring down in the open field... plus big play ability.

I know what you mean but I'm curious to see him in not only a traditional WCO but Kyle's WCO.
Great job AB. I like your 53 man roster. Offense needs a ton of work but the defense is building something special.
For Vance, we need to set up short patterns 2-5 yards and try and get him to turn and run for the same.

I believe Vance is a first down or seconds and 5 type of TE.

If he is used in these circumstances; he can be quite effective.

Thanks SisterFister, I agree, the offense needs more work, obviously a franchise QB, maybe Beathard will be that. Also need a true #1 WR for the future, who at TE will step up, I'm confident in the RBs and JUICE, also Garcon, Kerley, Goodwin and Robinson. I have high hopes for Kittle and Joe Williams. I like Taylor. But a lot of IFs and not many Certainties.

I see McD as a clunky, not very instinctive TE; but you could be right about the systems he's been exposed to...or in...
Just throw him short patterns and let him take hits.

Vance does that not bad.

Yeah, I knew what you meant by that. I haven't heard a single report about him ironically. I'm curious to see what happens next.

Hey Jason - I agree that his contract with us is horrible, but that's mostly bc of the bonus. The numbers above don't seem like much if a team thinks a starting-caliber TE. His contract (if traded) is definitely not top-32 TE $ year one and three - probably will be in year two. If a team thinks he'll be as good as he was last year - which wasn't that great - seems like a good deal, bc we'd be paying 1/2 of the money.

The Tank, Armstrong, Dial and Celek extensions, which they have GTD money this year, are nothing compared to Vance's, Tank's is 1yr deal, Armstrong 2yr(1yr GTD, only $850K), Dial(3yrs left, only this year is GTD for $1.4M) and Celek(3yr lefts also, $1M GTD this year)

Those 2-3 years deals left have no GTD money left after this year, not for injury or fully GTD at signing.

Thank you for stating the facts. His contract suck for the niners

I agree that the deal wouldn't be horrible if Vance turns into a true #1 TE, it's just those future injury guarantees that he has which makes it almost impossible to deal him unless we eat some of the money, or he redoes his deal for the team acquiring him.

No problem. I agree the contract sucks right now, if he turns into a #1 TE if kept, then it's fine-ish, I'm still not happy about the 5yr $35M deal he got, ridiculous amount for a TE that has yet to show anything that he is a #1 TE. At least Vernon Davis showed it, and then got an extension he deserved with us in 2010.

Facts
Some people argue that he deserved that money, but do to his injury history and drop history I would have to go with the belief that he was over paid cause he was a Ballke guy. The minute the niners drafted a TE and signed one this offseason automatically meant trouble for any current niner TE. It will be interesting if McDonald make the teams. Who will get the majority of the snaps?
I could see the rookie getting a lot of snaps if he shows he can handle is own early on in training camp and preseason.
