To me, it isn't so much about the LB position, as it is their assignments within the positon. I see the DL the same way.

So, if a player dominates at stopping the run, he's on the 53. If he dominates as an interior or edge rusher, he's on the 53.

Those are Saleh's 2 biggest needs.

So, for now, I see the following strengths:

Run Stuffers
: DeForest Bucker, D.J. Jones, Earl Mitchell, Solomon Thomas & Arik Armstead
Interior Pass Rushers: DeForest Bucker, Tank Carradine, Earl Mitchell, Solomon Thomas, Ronald Blair & Arik Armstead
Edge Rushers: Aaron Lynch, Eli Harold, Elvis Dumervil & Ahmad Brooks

It looks like we have plenty of run stuffers and interior rushers so this is where you hope a guy like Pita or Gilbert shine and push either Tank or Blair off the 53.

I'd hate to see Blair get cut, he was one of my draft steals from 2016, a monster at Appalachian State, to me, he can play the Big End, and DT spot. I think Tank gets cut, and probably Dial, who's playing exclusively at NT apparently behind Mitchell, I hope Jones(D.J.) can beat him out.

Personally of the above I'd keep, Buckner, DJ Jones, Mitchell, Thomas, Armstead, Blair, Dumervil, Lynch, Brooks, and cut Tank, Dial, with Harold and Chris Jones as two guys I'm unsure where they will fit. I like Harold, just depends on if Lynch and the new regime does. Also I think Pita may be PS destined like kirkscrafford said.

I'm with you...I love Blair and think he could be dynamic as a rotational interior pass rusher at the 3T 'with' Solomon Thomas and like Thomas, could play some big end too on passing downs. Ironically, Tank has also been getting some first team reps too but in part, because Thomas isn't here yet.

If both have really good interior pass rush, that could push Dial and Jones off the roster. And with Elvis here, that allows Lynch to move back to SAM and now, Harold may not be needed.

So lots of moving parts. I know you have a couple more with a couple ST guys making it too.

And based on talent, and potential, I take Blair over Dial, even with $1.4M of his base GTD, cause Blair can play Big End and DT spots. Plus very athletic.

Well done, but I truly believe Lynch gets cut, the Niners want to send a message that a player who is not football smart and is always out of shape in pre season will be cut. I also believe every rookie deal is four years, so Blair will get the nod over tank carradine as blair will be on a low rookie contract for 3 more years

Yeah, I'm very curious to see what happens with Lynch. With AA/Elvis locking down the LEO, is he now going to compete at the other premier pass rush position in the SAM? It sounds like Kyle and the coaches love Brooks there, Harold has been working there exclusively, Smith could play there in a pinch, Watson, etc.
On both the DL and OL, I think there will be guys cut that can play in this league. Unless there are some injuries, these guys will get snapped up. I'm hoping Lynch is able to turn some of it into trade capital, rather than just cut guys.

Lynch's fat but is cut and Pita makes the team, he is too good for the PS, and he will out hustle Lynch in camp. Coaches will reward the hustle

IF Lynch shows up the training camp at or below target weight and hustles his ass off, he makes the team, and we risk Pita to the PS.

Yup, the door is open for the next best pass rusher after Elvis. Bring on the competition!
Guys who may be traded or cut:
FS/SS Reid
TE McDonald
OLB/DL Brooks

Do they hold on to these guys who will age out as the team nears being competitive? Or are they so young that they should keep some vets? McDonald is pretty young--26, but has already been subject of trade talks.
QB (3): Hoyer, Barkley, Beathard

Tackle (3): Staley, Brown, Gilliam
Guard (3): Beadles, Garnett, Fusco
Center (2): Zuttah, Kilgore

LDE (2): Thomas, Blair

K(1): Gould
P (1): Pinion
LS (1): Nelson

PSQUAD:
Bolden, Colbert, Gilbert, Hikutini, Iworah, Bourne, Magnuson, Poach from another team after waivers clear
I have BJ Johnson over Burbridge.

I think Lynch finds a trading partner for McDonald...and keeps Hikutini. Cole is very likely to get swooped up by another team, a risk they won't want to take.

I'd say it's a toss up between Chris Jones & Blair. Saleh really likes CJ's hustle & desire.

Reaser starts opposite Robinson. Johnson may get cut. Redmond starts over Williams at slot.
