The key words there are "everything in his power". You have to remember that the salary cap, as it is now, wasn't in place then, so he could afford to pay both Joe and Steve for the four years or so they were on the team together. He could afford to pay all of his defensive and offensive stalwarts enough to keep them from being lured away to other teams. Walsh famously said, better to get rid of a player a year early rather than a year late, so he kept finding new guys to develop for the system. The current trend seems to be to hold onto to your core guys and retool around them as you go. Different models, different results. As far as I know, Eddy never had to pay Jerry or Joe 20-$50 million a year, probably not even the equivalent adjusted for inflation.

I almost agree with you and DrEll here. I still think you are missing what differentiates Jed York from Eddie D, outside of the differences in the league (like salary cap, free agency, etc).

You both seem to think Eddie D would have canned Kyle and Lynch for not winning a SB. I don't think Lynch is ever here in the first place.

I do think Jed wants to win, generally speaking. That's about the most positive thing I can say about him in the context of the product on the field though. I think he has struggled to get out of his own way.

Of course he wouldn't. Apparently he didn't want the 49ers back when he had an opportunity to regain control. If he regained control or never got involved in that reckless scandal he probably would have sold the team when the timing was right.

I really think people don't have a great grasp of how the Yorks took control of this team. He in no way could have had the team back without a protracted legal battle (with the Yorks) which he ultimately didn't want to pursue. Likely for various reasons, but one of them was for sure the public smearing of the family.

Agreed. I do think Jed wants to win. But I don't think he has that hunger his uncle did, and he's clearly not as competent.
Eddie d would have fired Shannahan right after he lost the last Super Bowl.
But this is Jed's team. Kyle's gonna get himself another extension!!!!

personally I think Kyle's gonna be here for at least another 6 years.

The onus is on the team to have a great offseason/draft and make that a consistent thing. Draft closers and build the roster up.

Perhaps what he meant when he said "I wouldn't" is that he wouldn't be in that predicament... he doesn't see himself in a SB drought that long. If that's his thinking (imo), then rightfully so... I also don't think he'd go 31 years w/out another SB if he were the owner. He'd probably try to move the team back to SF / Candlestick as well

I think there's a difference in the mentality of owners that inherit or buy teams vs those that build it from the ground up. Guys like Eddie and hell even Jerry Jones…they treat the team like their own kid. They'll bend over backwards to get that ring. Jed may be a fan of the team but his loyalties lie more in the brand than the team itself. He's looking at the profit side of it and sure winning and fame brings more revenue but there's a "we got time as long as the $$$ keeps coming" part of it I don't appreciate. If Eddie was still owner of the 49ers "brand" and everything that comes with it (eg European soccer club, World Cup, concerts, etc) I still think he puts the team first and all those things second. Whereas Jed looks at all of them as the same eg investments that will help the company grow. That's why I don't think Kyle and Lynch would last long because I don't think Eddie would have the patience if just letting the team hang around…

Absolutely... Different generations dude, everything changes and so does priorities, expectations, etc. But I do believe if the hunger / pride was there like uncle's, we'd probably have at least one more ring imo
I'm sure Kyle remains accessible during his vacation while Lynch and the FO guys engage with Schwartz, but it is funny AF to imagine him super faded and just completely out of it while FO is trying to reach him.

What's also funny is that some of the Zoners actually believe this lol

lol
