49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Thread

What I loved was what the 49ers chose to do in the 4th quarter of the game.
Because Aiyuk dropped a perfectly thrown 3rd down pass, and then Gould missed a FG that would've made it a 3 score game with 5 minutes to play, we found ourselves up two scores with 5 minutes left. It's improbable, but not impossible, for the Seahawks to have won at that point, but lo and behold... they scored a TD and we were up by 8 with 3:35 to play.

How would Purdy/Shanahan as a QB/Coach tandem fare in a 4 minute offense situation, with an 8 point lead? In this case, I was very happy with what happened--we came out running, and the offensive line & CMC did well enough to get us to 3rd and 1 with 2:42 left. What would the playcall be? Would we just pound it up the gut, and if we got stopped, we'd punt the ball and give Seattle a chance to score with about 2:30 and no timeouts? I'd still feel good about that game situation with our defense, but if we can just put the game on ice... that would be ideal.

Shanahan's solution was to run a playcall that would either result in an easy CMC dumpoff for a first down, or Purdy using his underrated athleticism to pick up the first down. The latter ended up happening, but Purdy executed it so perfectly that (1) he slid safely and didn't take a hit, (2) he stayed in bounds and kept the clock running, and (3) he picked up the first down. From there, the Seahawks challenged the play and ended up losing their last timeout.

At that point, I felt the game was virtually won. We could've just run it three more times and burned down the clock to under 30 seconds, before punting. Fortunately, Jordan Mason made it even MORE decisive, ripping off a big 55 yarder (that he probably could've just knelt down once he passed the first down marker, but fortunately no harm, no foul), and he finished the game for us.

One of the things that goes so undervalued on this board sometimes, especially when things go a bit awry. The players in the league know this is a top spot to play because of Shanalynch. It's been a sneaky huge part of the success here since 2019, and should be recognized and appreciated more.

CMC went to the playoffs in his first year with the Panthers, and then he was their bell cow the next two seasons, suffered some injuries, and the Panthers had losing seasons until we finally traded for him.

You love to see great players like CMC getting to shine like he is with us, and he'll get a chance to do big things in the playoffs this year too.
Can't be the only one who still sees shanahan as a good schemer and terrible game manager.

USE MASON. DON'T KILL MCCAFFREY. IF YOU GET THE OFFSIDES ON 4 and 7 TO MAKE IT 4 and 2 GO FOR IT. DON'T BURN A TIMEOUT WHEN PLAYCLOCK IS RUNNING IF YOU'RE BACKED UP AGAINST THE GOAL LINE ANYWAY. USE HURRY UP OFFENSE.

Does he know he can use aiyuk on pre-snap motion sweep? Or Juice as a short yardage runner or pass catcher? Or Jennings more frequently?

To me, great coaches woulda won this game 35-3. And yes, I'm not taking away that he's working with a 7th rd rook qb; i'm talking situationally when it didn't have anything to do with brock or putting him at risk.

Even the td series. why are you continually pounding CMC up the gut when he's your biggest asset right now and has an injury history (as do the 49ers), when you have mason.

I just think that kind of coaching not to lose and being cute will be what always holds this team and coach back from winning a super bowl. too ready to just lean on his all pro defense instead of working harder and more aggresively to hold up his end of the bargain.

This. 23 carries for CMC on a Thursday night game with a big lead and short rest is ridiculous.

Thank you. Because shanahan is autistic.

On a game win by 8 and clinch the playoffs? Okay then.

Ya I'd generally like to see more Mason, but absolutely zero problem with cmc's load in a division winning game against our rival on the loudest stadium in the country. As a matter of fact I was shocked he wasn't in the last three carries.

Kyle the plane is about to leave. Time to board.

No one else thinks this. If CMC got hurt based on his ridiculous overuse everyone would sing a different tune. It's unnecessary. You have other playmakers and Mason is much better up the gut. Don't kill your last lifeline you idiot.

you could have contributed an actual, logical rebuttal.

I'm thrilled they won. but this guy is an OC and not a head coach and that won't win them a super bowl...ever.

Damn, I wish you were our coach. Probably do so much better than Kyle.

I think it has a lot to do with the play calling he can run with CMC vs JP. That tells me shanahan believes in JP's talent and potential but not quite there yet.

but i do agree he should give at least 3-4 more to JP a game

I could, but you are just whining at this point. Mainly because you hate the coach despite the team being 10-4 with a 3rd-string QB. Overall, not worth the effort.

Exactly. This guy will show up after every win and still find a way to s**t on things

It's very easy to coach from the couch.

I have no problem with Kyle riding with his All Pro RB tonight and not putting pressure on his undrafted rookie RB.
I just don´t understand CMC with 32 touches and Mason only with 4.

I get that CMC is an All-Pro but if he keeps getting 30 touches per game he won´t be healthy in january.
