alternatively we could get 2 hot shot LBs and improve our pass rush that way. Still , you never know what Lynch will come up with, and we could end up with 2 starter LBs and a starter CB. I expect he is going to do something like that....plus improve the two D lines as noted above. Man it is nice to be fixed at safety. If however, it works out that we make a run on Ansah, well, that would be something interesting..... but with jimmy's contract, I just don't see signing Ansah for $18 mil or whatever he ends up with. I think our ER comes next yr, unless we draft an up and comer who needs a full yr before he is ready...i could see that.

It would be so sweet if we could get an undrafted elite edge rusher aka like a John Randal, but that's about a 1% chance of happening though. Fred Dean was a 2nd, Haley was a 4rth, Strahan was a 2nd round pick. So our edge rusher might not come from the 1st round, if the draft nerds are right that we'll be trading down. My hope is that we get that edge rusher in this years draft because it will take about a year for an edge rusher to play to his potential and it's in that 2nd year that he'll be more impactful. If there is one guy that knows who will be picked for the LEO position, my money is on NCcommand.

NC, I've always been amazed at your predictions regarding who ShanaLynch picks/drafts/chooses in the off-season. You were spot on 97% of the time last year, and I'll not be surprised if you hit it again this year.

Thanks my man! Yeah, last year I had a really good guage on what ShanaLynch would do to lay the foundation. This year surprisingly is more challenging. You'd think it would be easier because our work is cut out for us and we have total cap freedom to outbid anyone but this is new territory. The free agent market is only good for CB. It's terrible for C and G and ER. It's decent for LB. Many say the draft is deep for CB, interior OL and RB.

Here are the pools for FA's I've identified for targets:

So if the free agency and draft are indeed strong as noted above, then we'll attack the CB market aggressively first. Then play the G and T market to see how that plays out before finally, grabbing a SAM/MIKE/WILL. For the OL, it looks like we'll go second and third tier veterans again and supplement with higher draft capital to groom and develop behind them (like Kilgore).

Then in the draft, we go BPA in the first and then address the needs of ER, C/G/T, ILB, RB, WR and CB after that.

Do you have a plan of action? I like seeing other's takes.

Why? Because we're the 49ers and we have Jimmy G Spot.

Nope, not me, I usually basically copy and paste you and the draft nerds when I talk to my beer buddies about 49er football. That is a solid plan given the available talent on market this year. Free agency is to plug the holes so you can go BPA in the draft, and I think you hit the nail on the head again, with regards to how ShanaLynch is thinking.

I hear you. I lean heavily on my WZ draft brothers in making my mock and putting it together with the off season plan.

Good times coming and thanks for the kind words and perspectives.
Im very intrigued to get our OL and pass rushers in the draft. 2 each, 1 CB and 1 RB.

PFF and Odd:

everything is according to PFF in the chart previous page, and we all know they are notoriously off in many ratings. Notorious. So using their stats, here are some thots:

OG: Norwell (CAR)..88.8..... and there is no other OG in striking distance of Norwell, indicating it is him or get someone equal to Fsco at 76. 76? Wow that seems way high. But point is if we don't take Norwell, we are really not improving ourselves at OG. So I would go ALL IN here and blow a load on Norwell... if that is $12, $14mil, so be it. But be high bidder. This one guy for sure. Plus we all know the guy is a stud. I wouldn't now be going after other OGs and we need TWO starters, but I would burn a bundle on Norwell. Other comes high in draft. Somewhere we have to move up to fill the holes we have to have.

C...holy cripes. Ryan Jensen 74.9 and rated avg. We got average already, so now I see why signed Kilgore...sure didn't at time, but now...yeah. Richburg (NYG) is avg at 71 and that isn't great either. Plus we've seen him and neither guy is that impressive. If either could be had for low ball, then I would consider, but why get more of what we have already. We need a C bad....maybe 1st or 2nd pick in draft PLUS take one of these two avg Centers. Neither is impressive. Kilgore was rated in the low 70s. I don't see that big if any improvement here. Maybe save our money here, unless we can snake one of top 2 for like $6 or $8 mil ..no more than that for sure. Not liking this scenario for us.

CB:
Fuller (CHI)..I think he signed elsewhere.
Rashen Melvin (IND) 85.7 hi $$ don't know much about him
EJ Gaines (BUF) 85.9 Hi $$ but definitely in the mix.
Malcolm Butler 81 and we are interested.
Robey-Coleman (RAMS) 85.2 If Lynch likes him a lot, pay him and take away a good CB from our enemy in W conference.
Trumain Johnson (RAMS) 74.3 Graded avg...better than what we have which is nothing.
Aquib Talib(DEN)...too damn expensive and head case

I think here we sign one guy and then go for CB early in draft top 3 picks.

Mike/SAM
Demario DAvis(NYJ) 87.3
Avvery Williamson (TEN) 86 Both top 2 guys big in sacks and then Bradham(Phil), Hitchens(DAL), and Whitehead(DET) are all 3 sack guys. Only interest here would be top two(one of them) and top 4 rd picks in draft. The low sack guys, try and get for low ball $$.

Whole problem here is this is based off PFF and a good many of their ratings are just wacky. Based on this tho, I may now be interested in Jensen/Richburg but not at $10 mil. they just aren't that good but are better than Kilgore. We need either one but if we don't succeed then top C in draft...we gotta have him.

CBs and LBs as above.

That sounds like the plan, doc. I think you've got a good guage for how the FO views this FA class and the draft. Now they have to execute!
Good post Paso! There are two ways I see the niners attacking this draft.
1) take the best player in a position of need.
2) identify the player they want and jockey around to maximize and take him.

Most of the players I see as elite will be gone by #9 unless QBs jump up the board. Some believe four QBs will go in the top ten. If that happens someone could drop--LB R Smith, OG Nelson, DB Fitzpatrick, RB Barkley. Chubb isn't dropping that much so...of those listed Smith would be my first choice. He could solidify the front seven and be insurance for Foster.
How long is that photo of the one that CB that got away going to be posted on the webzone home page? We didn't land him, lets move on.

Agreed. I think we luck out again with the BPA as a player of need too. And then after that, it's anybody's game!

There may well be a feeding frenzy on quarterbacks in which case potentially great players will drop to 9/10. I have my fingers crossed for Nelson but if 4 qbs have gone there may be a chance of a good trade back to allow a team to select their favorite qb, the highest of the 2nd rank players. Doubt it but when it comes to qbs in the draft things can get silly. I think a player like Nelson or Smith is highly possible for us.
