I panicked as soon as I heard that Lynch was the new GM, a guy with no scouting or executive background but based on what is being reported, the 49ers appear to be copying the Denver Broncos model for a front office. The same way that John Elway is the frontman for the organization but has others doing the bulk of the personnel work it sounds like Lynch will be the front man but will be having others doing much of the personnel duties. His role almost sounds like the Vice President of Football Operations position that people have long been hoping that this franchise would get. In that role, Lynch starts to make a bit more sense. The way Denver has their front office setup John Elway- Executive Vice President of Football Operations/General Manager Matt Russell-Director of Player Personnel Mike Sullivan-Director of Football Administration With the 49ers it sounds like it will be: John Lynch-GM ?????(Mark Dominik?) as Head of Player Personnel Tom Gamble as Head of Pro Personnel Marathe handling contracts + the salary cap. Definitely an unorthodox setup but at least I can see some of the logic in it. I guess it depends entirely on how you feel about Dominik or whoever Lynch brings in to handle the bulk of the personnel duties. I can see Lynch being the representative of the team at press conferences, meeting with free agents, handling other public appearances while most of the personnel work is done by the people under him and Marathe maintains his current role of salary cap plus contracts. You would also have a lot of symmetry if its Dominik. Lynch played with the Bucs while Dominik was in the Tampa front office. Lynch played under Mike Shanahan and is said to be extremely close to the Shanahans, he supposedly called up Kyle and offered to be his GM. Kyle was in Tampa while Dominik was in the front office as well so at least at first glance there shouldn't be any major tension between the front office and the coaching staff, things should work pretty smoothly. Its an interesting approach, either Jed and Marathe will look like geniuses or this franchise will be an even bigger disaster.

This is what a lot of people asked for and I'm kind of shocked that Jed went for it. They have a real honest to goodness football guy in the front office, someone that played under Bill Walsh, Denny Green, Jon Gruden, Mike Shanahan, Tony Dungy and Bill Belichick. A HOF caliber player that knows how a proper football organization should be run.

As long as he picks a quality personnel guy, I can see this being a big plus.

I'm all for bringing in a top level exec with a football background, but no front office experience, to be the new face of the organization.

In fact, that's what I argued for as soon as the season ended.

HOWEVER.... what I wanted was for them to hire that person right away, and then let them play a major role in the GM and HC hiring process. I suggested Steve Young for this, and was roasted for wanting someone with no front office experience in there. Which obviously seems pretty funny to me now.....

The reason I wanted this football exec type of role filled first is because I have no confidence in Jed's decision making or in his relationships and reputation with the rest of the league. The last couple weeks have shown pretty clearly what I was afraid of, that most of the league does not take Jed seriously and has no desire to work with him. My hope was that a guy like Steve Young could have pulled off hiring Wolf or one of the more promising GM candidates.

What we got instead was weeks of public humiliation as candidate after candidate backed out, Lynch instead of Young as the guiding force of the franchise, and Dominick instead of Wolf.

We still have Kyle, who was my top choice at HC the whole time. So it's not a complete disaster. But it still looks like Jed fumbled around thinking he knew what he was doing and was backed into taking lesser candidates for our most important front office roles.

Um if this was the plan why not announce it two weeks ago? Why set up all those packers interviews.

Jed is a dumpster fire. Hes performing ballet on banana peels and manure.

John Elway had zero NFL front office experience is a Stanford grad and succeeded in Denver. John Lynch also has zero NFL front office experience and graduated from Stanford. If this works are teams going to be looking for other ex players who graduated from Stanford to be their GM?

In 2022 the Cleveland Browns name this guy as their GM
