You are right about that though, it does look way different. The GM and HC in basketball shorts? I love it...

Scotty M. would have been down there in a damn suit.

Easier to stash a bottle

There is probably some truth to that sadly.

More importantly, please just pass a resolution to increase the 53 by at least a few - would like to see it at around 57 so teams could hold on and develop talent they draft or find (UFAs, etc.) instead of possibly losing them on the PS.

Naw they won't do that. Can't let teams try and stash away talent on their PS for a rainy day. A team like the Pats would abuse that in no time. Would also take power away from PS players and potentially rob them of a chance to be signed to a 53 if injuries hit another team.

My wish for the increase of the 53 (won't happen, unfortunately) has nothing to do with stashing talent on the PS - you can't do that anyway as teams can sign away anyone from another team's PS. What I'm getting at is this: Limiting it to only a 53 that are team-protected penalizes teams that draft well and can identify talent in the later rounds (6th, 7th, etc.) or from UFAs. Those potential "hidden gems" that may just need some developing but aren't quite there yet for the 53 are exposed by going to the PS. The 53 as a total number isn't a lot if you really look at it considering all the injuries that happen over the course of a season...and, three of those spots go to the K, P, and LS as it is. So, increase it by 3 to 56 to account for those three (K, P, LS). I'd rather have teams that draft well and find that hidden talent rewarded by allowing them time to develop the player rather than possibly losing the player on the PS.

I agree that this is a good move on the League's part. As for increasing the 53 man roster to help developing players - Harbaugh used to stash promising players on IR, I don't see why you can't do that nowadays so I'm kinda 50/50 on increasing the roster size. I mean I don't see the difficulty of having a guy like Matt Breida get a hangnail in practice and having the doctors call it a season ending injury and putting him on IR.

Especially now that they allow an extra player on I.R. to come back.

Yup. Add Hikutini and Pita as early candidates to come back from IR so we can see where they're at week 8 since they might be too raw by 53 man roster cuts.

I like the casualness.

They are trying to be something that they are not.

Fired up for shanahan and lynch hopefully these 2 can grow together and have lots of success

As long as Jed stays by the wayside and lets this happen, we should be alright.

Excellent! This perfectly illustrates what I think of the 49er ownership.

The guy looks like Jack Reynolds, man no wonder Dungy had him playing in the box.
[edit] oops I meant to quote Thl408 on Lynch *not* playing in the box.

I know, everything I've read online about the Tampa 2 says so, but in this book he gave a seminar article on his Tampa 2 defense and he had Lynch be playing in the box. I've looked everywhere for a accessible article for the Webzone members but non are available, oh well, might take a trip to the library and refresh my memory to see if it's still there.

Like it or not, Jed is still fist deep in this team. That's why Paraag was featured so prominently in the Peter King feature.

Absolutely...darn, those hang nails can be brutal.

When Lynch was on the Bucs winning with that strong defense, they played a lot of Tampa2, not always, but a lot. When they were in Tampa2 coverage, there's no way a safety can play in the box unless it's some sort of inverted look (safety covers underneath zone, CB playing a deep zone). I can't imagine that happening very often. Maybe it was on occasion that Lynch was brought into the box.

Here's Ronnie Lott talking about how the role of a Tampa2 safety (Lynch) doesn't allow for much flexibility in assignments.

Below are snippets: http://www.espn.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/230567/ronnie-lott-tampa-2-role-made-hall-vote-difficult-for-john-lynch
"For John, people won't necessarily see all the things that he could possibly do because the Tampa 2 didn't allow him to use all of his skills," Lott said.
"He was able to have moments where he showed flashes of, 'Wow, he made that play in a Tampa-2 deep position and he was able to make a play on the line of scrimmage or he was able to make a play on the outside when the ball is in the air and other safeties couldn't get there."
"But the Tampa 2 defense, it doesn't give you the creativity to have a safety that's blitzing. So all a sudden you look at his stats and you think, 'Why didn't he have quarterback sacks?' That's not his fault."

Hah. Hope Foster isn't a candidate but wouldn't be mad if he does so.
