Personally I think Kyle's gained a lot of confidence in John's scouting and player evaluation skills. I think he's developed a trust in John to let Kyle offload to John a lot of personnel decisions because he's confident John *knows* the type of player he and his assistant coaches want. It also helps that John can also talk to Kyle's father too if he needs to -- to help in making some of the more difficult personnel decisions.
Ever since Adam Peters left the 49ers' scouting department, the drafts have been GREAT. Since Peters' departed, the 49ers have drafted:
Upton Stout
Dominic Puni
Ricky Pearsall (TALENT is there, injury woes have been unpredictable
Jaden Dugger
Mykel Williams
Gracen Halton
Tatum Betune (Would start on probably 50%+ of NFL teams)
Malik Mustapha
Kaelon Black
Connor Colby
Renardo Green
Marques Sigle
De'Zhaun Stribling
I don't EVER wanna hear "John Lynch can't draft" again.
Just looking at Adam Peters in Washington. His drafts remind me of the 49er drafts from 2017 to 2023 but without the late round successes. Pretty mediocre in my opinion. They got a good player in Jaden Daniels, but not much else and they are sitting at 1-3-1. Whereas the 49ers have had two strong drafts (2025 and 2026) and are sitting at 5-0, in addition to the late round surprises of Purdy, Puni, etc...
