ALL i know is that the best draft class I've witness from this team was the 1986 class...

ANYONE WANTS TO ARGUE ?
This regime has been living of good picks in the middle rounds (Warner, Kittle, Greenlaw, Hufanga, Lenoir) and the trades for future HOFers whitout giving a 1st round in exchange (T. Williams, CMC) because they have been awful in the 1st round with only Bosa and Aiyuk getting the extension.

At some point the are gonna have to get it right in the 1st round at least half of the time just like the league average because we won't get more HOFers in trades for basically nothing and we can't count on getting great players in the middle rounds all the time.

Ok enough. Read the title of this thread.

now see if you can work out when John Lynch, the subject of the thread, joined the team. Got that?

So, almost completely irrelevant, isn't it. I am going to assume that you are just posting this sort of rubbish to irritate other posters.

Ohhh. Do as everyone else and don't have a differing opinion or the big scary mods come in right??

You CAN criticize Lynch you know that right?

I listed all the player he has picked who were complete busts. It's not a small list.

Well, if you were really interested in making a point then you would compare that list to a list of every other team in the league to determine what percentage of their picks were misses. Then you would at least have some comparable data points. As has been said before, during Lynch's tenure there have been some notable whiffs at the top of the draft, which have been offset somewhat by the rather more notable success they've had in finding contributing players in the later rounds. I suspect, on average, the 49er's success rate in the draft is probably about par for the course around the league, or maybe slightly worse because they have had some stiffs at the top of the draft.

Cool, so you're not going to admit you used a bogus analysis to support your opinion.

The problem with your posts in this section has been that you provide no context for why some players were released or traded. These things don't happen in a vacuum.

Yes, some high picks have not worked out but, as others have directed, go compare that with other teams. You will find 1st round picks are a 50/50 deal.

Oh snarky. And you missed the point. I will repeat it slowly. John Lynch joined the team in 2017. Your list is from 2000 to 2020. So it is virtually all players who Lynch had no part in drafting. Or to put it another way, it is irrelevant in a thread about Lynch.

Lynch inherited a team of almost historic low quality. And transformed it.

You don't like Lynch. I don't care. That wasn't my point.

I never said I don't like Lynch. Don't put words in my mouth.

Also, that link that ranked the drafts has 3 of Lynch's drafts from 2017-2020. He's not immune from that ranking,

I said he has done a below average job at drafting players in rounds 1-3. But I have also gave him credit for finding stars outside those rounds.

Again, for the 10th time, yes all GMs miss on players. But how many miss on the 3rd overall pick and take one of the biggest busts ever in Solomon Thomas, trade away THREE 1st's and take a Jamarcus Russell bust in Trey Lance and trade one of the best defensive tackles away in DeForest Buckner.

I've listed all their bust picks in rounds 1-4 which is a lot. But find me one other GM who has made worse moves than those 3 right there. I will wait. Those are franchise altering misses.

I don't know about all that but , when your team picks fragile players that don't see any playing time and eventually get released year after year it's a problem. How many picks did we waste on receivers that flashed for a second got hurt and ended up being released? Add those to a completely neglected offensive line and busts on defense and you have a bigger problem. Someone has to be accountable.. it's more than bad luck, or a fluke.. it's year after year of the same. We need to get younger and cheaper right? Well with how we pick em it's a recipe for disaster and we are now eating the meal he cooked up. It don't taste good… sure we have a decent record now but let's not kid ourselves that won't last. Too many players are missing and are not coming back this year. I hate to add the one thing we all fear to the story… who is Purdy really? Well, we just don't know because he is not on the field and the last time he played was very concerning. Kyle is doing an outstanding job of holding things together and milking the most out of what he has. Just imagine what the team could do if he had legitimate talent on the field instead of on the sidelines…. I will end with this. You have a top 3 HC that has a brilliant offensive mind and you have Lynch. If you want to breath new life into the team who would you replace? Easy answer for me….

Fine. Then do the same the same with every other team in the league and compare the results, starting in 2017 and ending in 2025, using as a criteria, players who are no longer with the teams that drafted them versus players who were drafted, are still on the team, and have made notable contributions. Then you'll at least have some context for your argument. As it is now, you're only looking at one set of data points out of 32 and claiming that it is outside the norm. Prove it or quit complaining.

Go ahead and prove it if you want to.

All one has to do is look at his draft picks and personnel decisions and you will see what you need to see. You don't need a massive spreadsheet with data points and pie charts. It's right in front of you.

I will make it easy for you. Find me one GM who has THREE moves like this:

Trades Deforest Buckner
Takes Solomon Thomas 3rd overall
Trades 3 first round picks for Trey Lance.

If every GM is on par with each other it should be easy to find someone else who has made three horribly epic decisions like this in 8 years.
It doesn't make a difference where teams find their best players. First round or 5th round. If they can play and make an impact nobody cares where they're picked. About half the players on teams in the league were free agents. Many were UDFAs. The fact that only about half of the first round picks end up having an impact should be enough to tell you that drafting college players is a crapshoot. You pick your guy and take your chances. Some never see the field because they get hurt in camp and never really recover. Some just have continuing nagging injuries that keep them from practicing and they never reach their potential. Then we have the guys with off field issues like Reuben Foster. There just isn't any such thing as a sure pick.
