I don't really know how draft compensatory picks work, but I think if undrafted free agents sign a one to three year commitment to the 49ers and get signed by another club, the 49ers can get draft compensation. So (for example) if any of the OLine Undrafted free agents make the team, and get signed - 49ers get some draft compensation. So guys with Tom Compton-like UDFA skill set where he develops into a credible depth player and is signed by another team (even if he's not a starter) 49ers can get something like a 5th to a 7th round pick. I think the 49ers are moving towards this kind of money-ball strategy, or draft-ball kind of strategy. If they develop undrafted guys like West or Poe into good depth, and they get signed by another team - that's a good day 3 pick, that you can build a teams injury depth around. Or, the other option, is to trade these day three picks for a day two pick, or move a day one pick higher with a bundled day three pick.

This year, the 49ers had (I think) 6 day three picks. I'd love it if the 49ers had 7+ day three picks every draft year. Imagine the kind of draft maneuvering they can do on day one or day two with multiple 5th, 6th, or 7th round day three picks. I think the 49ers are developing a player development strategy that makes losing depth players a strength rather than a weakness.

Projected compensatory picks [for 2023]: Two in Round 3; one in Round 5; one in Round 7.
Key free-agent losses: Laken Tomlinson (Jets), D.J. Jones (Broncos), Arden Key (Jaguars).
Key free-agent addition: Charvarius Ward.
Comp-pick analysis: The 49ers will receive the second of two third-rounders awarded for Mike McDaniel being hired as Dolphins head coach this offseason and the third of three third-rounders awarded for losing both Robert Saleh (Jets head coach) and Martin Mayhew (Commanders GM) in 2021. They will also take home a fifth for Jones and a likely seventh-round pick for Key, provided he makes the Jaguars -- which is very likely. The departure of Tomlinson and addition of Ward cancel each other out in terms of compensatory-pick eligibility.

Can't find a partner willing to take his contract and give up picks? I don't think that has anything to do with signing him

I think we're done with signing key players.

Yeah, and the Giants ate a lot of money, he had some roster bonuses due at beginning of new league year, they tried trading him, no one bit, or took him of course, we'll see what he gets, not sure if any GTD money would offset what he's owed from the Giants.

Read in the FA thread is that he gets a PI or fumble

so a younger current Josh Norman. which would make a good reason to cut him

I wouldn't say he's very good anymore. I'm more than fine with the guys we have in the secondary.

Baker had an epic team around him too and couldn't do jack. Dude is trash.

Thank god I'm not the only one who thinks he's trash, he's so meh to me, should never have gone #1 overall.

You certainly aren't alone.

Same.
Haha. So perfect. Nick Wagoner said, "...this team is all about Sacks and YAC. This is how they're built."

Spot on.

I think Trey's Arm is going to burn a lot of secondaries this upcoming season.
