A few things to consider:

1. With the cap continuing to increase $5-10 million every year makes a high priced contract in year 1 look somewhat high in year 2 look like a good deal in year 3 look like a bargain in year 4.

Torrey Smith is a contract that was high 2 years ago, but it's going to seem like a decent deal after this year's FA. And the good thing about his contract is that we can restructure after this year for some savings.

2. For his good and bad, Marathe kicks ass at contract structure. Even overpaying for players may just be an optics game for agents, but the details will show very smart structure. Don't judge a contract by its cover.

3. I think we all agree that building thru the draft is the way to go, but horrid drafting makes you pay to correct a wrong. That's just fundamental in the NFL.

Lynch is going to be active but expect more lower key signings vs high priced signings until we get our QB squared away.

After watching the D at the combine yesterday and looking forward to the DBs tomorrow... Boy, can get some very nice players. Another second/third with a trade down would be sweet depending on our targets.
Not saying we shouldn't try to add a player or tow like Garcon, but show me a team that is not a contender that went buck wild and overpaid and I will show you a team wasted its time and will have to recover if they got burned getting to close to the cap limit.
we have to spend some of this money being 100 million under the cap is ridiculous!

I don't think it's ridiculous and we shouldn't spend just to spend. We're not one or even five players away from competing(unless it's a franchise QB) so if someone isn't a great fit or wants way too much then we should pass.

That cap room will come in handy if we start nailing our draft picks.

However the one guy I really hope we go after hard and we will have to overpay to get is Dont'a Hightower. I think he'd be a great addition to this team not only with his talent but what he brings to the locker room/field as far as leadership. And the Pats letting him go without the franchise tag is basically them saying, see what offers you get and come back to us and we'll either match or give you our blessing. Now with CA taxes and the state of the 49ers that offer better be pretty damn substantial for the Pats to not match but I think he'd be worth it.

I tried to spend $105M and could only spend UP to $80M in free agency (between $65-80M). There is absolutely no reason not to be aggressive. There are a lot of really high quality picks in the 24-27 age range that are great fits for the WCO and 4-3 under defense.

Well, there are those that do not let the reality of our situation influence the thinking that works on Madden. We are going to have to pay for whoever we want. This team has been dysfunctional at best for several years. We don't even have a QB signed yet. While we may have made improvements at HC, and GM, it isn't a proven recipe for success yet. While I don't think we overpaid, I don't think we got a deal either. When we get to where we are a premier destination, that is when free agents will consider more than just dollars. I think in this case we had a guy put his faith in the direction we are going, but also got his money. Good deal for both sides. But we will probably have to outbid others for the majority of any FA signings that have multiple offers.

Yeah, we certainly didn't overpay for THIS contact but I agree with your overall premise...for outside starters, no doubt we'll have to pay more.

But the one advantage we have is that we can offer more than anyone on upfront money (guaranteed, signing bonus, first year, etc.).

It is like the snowball rolling downhill. It rolls easier and faster as it goes.

In this case, much will depend on who Lynch can bring on as QB. If he can bring in Cousins, the price for Marshall or Jeffrey will go down a bit. If it is Garappolo, the price will stay pretty solid. If it is Hoyer or Schaub, or a rookie, the price will be the very top of the market if there is any interest at all.

I just feel the slot position is the easiest WR spot to pad stats that are not ypc. It is a also a position that is full of competition. He is solid but seriously think we can do better.

Honestly Lynch has an easy task in his first year as GM. All he has to do is go out and sign 3 to 4 players in free agency (1 first tier, 2 second tier), trade for Kirk Cousins and draft players that aren't coming off ACL injuries.

Boom!!! success!!!

Bye Bye Armstead, Buckner, Dial, Ahmad Brooks, Aaron Lynch.

K, maybe not Buckner, but I do have a strong feeling that it's Armstead he's talking about.

I wish they would trade Eric Reid too and Bethea.

What do the Eagles need, let's give them a player for Jordan Matthews.
