See my post above . Ebron will be a 1000 yard pro bowl TE next year.

Cool. That's a good mentality to build towards. Imagine AA and Buck plowing ahead at the snap instead of standing up and just trying to control the OLman. JoN asked his LBs to read and react to what the DL was doing. That's a lot of thinking that close to the line of scrimmage where everything happens so fast.

Yup, AA and Buck have a lot of ability. It seems like a better use of their talents to simplify the mental aspect of the game for them and just let them shoot the gaps and make a play. Same thing with the LBs. Have a system where these guys have a clearly defined role on every snap and let them play without thinking so much..

I think in this day and age of free agency and less practice time on the field, it's become important to have a less complex scheme - I don't want to say 'simple' - for the reasons you stated. Read and react schemes are complex and great, imo, if it can be taught to the players and the players remain in the system, but that's not easy to achieve.

Good point. It can work great with the right talent and continuity. Fangio ran a pretty traditional 3-4 here and did some complex stuff in coverage. It worked great.

Then I look at a team like Seattle that has kept their defensive core together a while and still keep things relatively "simple". They have that aggressive play fast mentality that Carroll is a big believer in.

A lot of different approaches work, but definitely harder to be a complex, read and react defense when there are so many moving parts all the time.

I'm a fan of the read and react stuff if it can be done right because I feel it can adjust better to what the offense is doing post snap, but we saw first hand what a bad teacher teaching a young roster a complex scheme will result in. Damn that was ugly.

Indeed. O'Neil was just way in over his head and too ambitious with this young roster. Good coaches adapt to the players and gives them the best shot at success. I felt like he made guys look a lot worse than they actually were. We invested a lot in the Front 7, so it was highly discouraging to rank dead last in every run defense category. Hopefully the new d-coordinator turns that around quick, because there is some talent upfront. Need Bow back healthy and a stout run defender in the middle of the line.

Bring back old-school Sourdough Sam too!
When we get our 6th, Jed better have Eddie on stage. Have him be the second person to handle the trophy.
