am proceeding with guarded caution and some optimism
Wouldn't that be something if the 49ers inducted officially 2 members of the organization in consecutive years.
Lynch already doing a good job letting Kaepernick go.

Letting him go? He has no control over whether Kap stays or goes. Kap has the opt-out, it's his decision and his decision alone if he wants to go.

The decision is on both the team and Kap. If either wants to void the contract they can do it. The only way he comes back is if it's mutual.

edit: nm I can't confirm that it's a team and player option. I swear I read that somewhere.

What makes you believe that the 49ers couldn't simply release Kaepernick? His salary isn't guaranteed. They would take a very small cap hit for doing so. I suspect that this leak about Kaepernick opting out has more to do with his agent making a preemptive move to not be cut.

There is approximately zero chance that any team in the NFL will be paying Kaepernick anything close to what he was set to earn for 2017.

If Kap wants to leave, the decision is not on the team. It seemed like he was giving Lynch credit for allowing Kap to leave when in reality, if Kap wants to leave, no one on the team can do anything about it. That's all I was trying to say. Obviously if Kap stays, it's a mutual decision.

Of course the team can release him even if he wants to stay. All I was trying to say is that if Kap wants to go, he can go and the team can't do anything about it.

I thought it was a player and team option. That would make it mutual. But I can't find where I read that so maybe I was imagining it. So it appears that if Kap wants to exercise the option, he could, and the team would have to take him back. In other words, the team can tell him, "we don't want you here." He can still use the option and come back. He wouldn't feel wanted, but he'd be back.

Correct. But if he uses the option, we can still cut him and save $16.7 mil. He's probably just going to opt out. It's also better for us that he opts out rather than having to cut him, because then we could get a compensatory pick for him.

Comp pick?

You do know how comp picks work?

Yeah. If he opts out and signs somewhere for more than the vet minimum, which he should, he'll factor into the comp pick equation.
