Will having so few picks in this draft help our salary cap situation?

This plus trimming the fat (busts) off the roster after this season; S. Thomas/Goodwin/Pettis

While also upgrading some of our higher priced (& some older) free agents with next years draft picks; Sherman/Gould/Colman

Plus possible retirement: Staley

Kinda. But the picks they're missing were not significant cap hits. It's hard to see the cap #s associated with rounds 2-4 having any meaningful impact on this team.

I guess I was thinking about the Deebo's and Kittle's of the world, no pick = no future contract.

That's nuts to trade the 13th pick or Buckner straight up for Hopkins, and then what? Who takes Buck's spot? We weren't getting Hopkins, Bill O'Brien coveted David Johnson, and took a lesser offer to get Johnson, we had no one to trade that Houston would have coveted, plus we don't have a 2nd-4th rd picks, so it wasn't happening. People need to quit thinking like Madden GMs, and start thinking how real NFL GMs think.

How is that NUTS?! The trade O'Brien made was NUTS! The 13th pick is probably triple the value of Johnson. They could've traded back a couple of times, taken a replacement for Hopkins and draft a top tier RB. Real GMs.. please. Like O'Brian? Madden wouldn't even approve that terrible trade. If Stefon Diggs can get traded for a 2020 first-round pick (No. 22 overall), a 2020 fifth-round pick, a 2020 sixth-round pick and a 2021 fourth-round pick, getting a future HOF WR who's only 26 years old for the 13th pick is a freaking bargain. And as for replacing Buck's spot? We'd still have our pick 31 to draft a DT. I'd also be fine with a rotation of Kentavius Street, DJ Jones, Thomas, Taylor and Armstead on passing downs like he did last year.

I understand the picks. I just felt if we were going to shore up a line O line was going to get the reinforcements. He also gave up good capital for a WR...somethign that has had mostly negative results for the 49ers so hopefully they make some more moves. Time will tell if leaving jeudy and lamb on the board was a smart move. If solomon thomas was halfway decent we maybe could have gone a different direction....

Chances of anyone outside of the 2nd round making this team are pretty small. Doesn't matter if we trade a 4th or a 7th, trade up and get the two dudes that will def make the roster and have an impact.

Good strategy. We'll see if they nabbed the right dudes

Really?? I don't agree at all.

Again you have Kyle and Lynch giving away Picks like skittles which is absolutely ridiculous..

We have how many undrafted free agents that currently contribute? A lot! Kittle was what, a 5th??

You use lower round draft picks For depth or you hope you hit a few home runs on a few!!

Come on, trade the trash and get back in
But we're gonna defend it like we did.

Last night we replaced what we lost earlier this offseason. We didn't get better compared to last year's roster.

We are worse and it can't be put any other way. Hopefully in a couple of years the guys we selected last night can turn out to be damn good players, comparable to the players they are drafted to directly replace. For this team to compete at a similar level they they last season it will because of the guys already here on the roster, not what was drafted.

I see no way that statement can be made before we see what our two draft studs are able to do once the season starts. And then, probably half a season until we really know. Prior to that we repaced two top flite players with younger guys and in Buck's case, it would be miraculous if Kinlaw comes close. But before sayin that i want to see what he can do once on the field. I have high hopes for both but seeing is believing.
I would say this to anyone complaining. Last year people wanted Williams over Bosa. I believe there was a story of how some in the scouting dept were upset they weren't listened to about picking QW. How'd that turn out so far? Same thing with deebo people felt X WR was better. If some of these fans were such great scouts I'm sure you'd be working for a NFL team making millions. We're definitely more incorrect than scouts.

Every GM has great decisions and some terrible ones. The draft is a lot of luck. None of these prospects are can't miss. Its understandable if you had a draft crush on someone and they aren't taken, but to claim X player is better than the selected player has no merit or proof, its your opinion. Aiyuk and Kinlaw (i wanted jeudy) were taken around there projected values and they got who they wanted, which for the most part has worked well out for this regime.
Combined 2020 cap hit of Buckner/Sanders: $27.4 million

Combined 2020 cap hit of Kinlaw/Aiyuk: $5.1 million

Analyzing what the 49ers are doing this draft goes well beyond that, but the financial details are at the root of it:

The key is what would his contract be like? Can they float him individually or would they need to make a move like cutting Staley/Staley retirement in order to afford him? Seems like the only way he lands in SF is if Staley retires and opens up some cap space.
