immediately is a tough word. They have to look at big picture and look ahead a bit.
I think we all know we won't be very good next year. So we'll likely be picking high once again.
Next year's QB class looks very impressive. If we draft QB in the first round this year it's highly unlikely we'd draft a QB high next year.
They'll have to really make sure if they use that #2 pick for QB that he's the right guy.
Next year we're potentially looking at these guys being in the draft
Josh Rosen
Sam Darnold
Luke Falk
Jake Browning
Mason Rudolph
Josh Allen
Wilton Speight
Lamar Jackson
Some of those guys have some serious potential for some great things. If we bypass QB in the first this year it's very possible we'll have a chance at a couple of those guys next year as you figure more teams fill their QB needs this year.
Looking ahead drafting QB in the first this year could be a mistake only because it will have us miss out on one of those guys so if there are any doubts on the guys available at #2 then we better hold off...and I hope we do even though I think Trubisky or Watson could be very good players.
Though of course we could go QB at #2 and still decide to draft one of those guys next year if they don't see enough out of the rookie but it sucks seeing that potential QB class NEXT year....we just had to win that Rams game damnit.
Myles Garrett would've been perfect along with one of those guys next year and someone like Mahomes or Peterson this year to groom.
I've always believed that if you think a guy can be a franchise QB you should take him, even if there is a guy like Garrett on the board. For example if you think Trubisky has a 60% chance of being a top 10 QB and Myles Garrett is on the board and you feel he has a 90% to be a all pro, you still should take the QB. A top teir QB is just too important in this league.
In the 2008 draft the Dolphins took Jake Long #1 overall, the Rams took Chris Long #2, and the Falcons took Matt Ryan #3. Sure both Long's might of been rated higher than Matt Ryan and Jake Long was an all pro LT, but if you do that draft again I guarantee Matt Ryan goes #1. Thats why I don't understand why some people have made statements like "if the niners draft one of the QB's with Garrett still on the board then Lynch should be fired on the spot."
Lastly, like you said, the way the rookie contracts are now you aren't forced to only take 1 QB in the first round for 5 years. The Panthers used their 2nd rd pick on Jimmy Claussen and then the next year used their 1st overall pick on Cam Newton
