John Lynch - 49ers GM

Bill Walsh was our HC and GM in 1979 -no experience at all as GM, two years as HC at Stanford before then.

McVay became our GM in 1980. No experience as a GM before taking the position.

So ... that juggernaut of experience (2 total years prior at their respective positions) led to 4 SBs.

You hire smart people and give them a shot. How many companies was Gates the CEO of before Microsoft? Zuckerberg before FB? For that matter, how many years was Belichick a GM before taking over football operations for the Pats?

Would everyone here be happier to hire Ballard? What he guaranty success?

Would imagine Mark Dominik (based on reports) & Dennis Hickey (based on Hickey/Dominik working Mobile together) would be in play for #49ers

I am pretty sure Mike's son is the coach, so there might be some contact.

I think that saying "it will be years before he has a firm grasp " on all these things is a reach. Sure there will be some learning curve but I dont think its going to take him years. He has Paraag doing the cap, he will have personnel guys doing scouting, and somehow I dont see John having problems with the interview process. He is a smart guy and this isnt rocket science.

This. It'd be one thing if he had to assume ALL the traditional duties of a GM but he is in a situation where he will be able to lean on a lot of people, especially if Dominik and Hickey both join the front office. I think he can be a big help when it comes to FA, as well as being the point of contact for people around the NFL, instead of having to deal with Baalke or York, now you have Lynch handling all of that. I hope he succeeds.

Exactly. This is a far cry from Matt Millen in my opinion.

Who the hell is Hickey?

Former Miami GM in 2014 and 2015. Got let go because Philbin was a terrible coach and Miami wanted to start clean in 2016. Dude made some very good picks in his first two years (see below).

OT Ja'Waun James (1st rounder, full time starter)
RB Jay Ajayi (5th rounder, became starter this year, made Pro Bowl)
CB Tony Lippett (5th rounder, became starter in year two)
WR Jarvis Landry (2nd rounder, full time starter and multiple Pro Bowls already)
DT Jordan Phillips (2nd rounder, full time starter since day one)

Nice, I'd be fine with that.

Gotta have a "go-to" guy and right hand man for Lynch like Elway does, and preferably I'd like it to be a former GM. Ideally I'd like it to be Hickey, but thinking realistically it'd probably more likely be Dominik getting the nod as the new assistant GM. This whole "giving Gamble a chance to prove himself" thing just seems odd. It sounds like the team is going to try to move him into another position (or fire him?) unless he nails the draft or something.

Dominik did draft the following players:

Gerald McCoy (pro bowler)
Doug Martin (pro bowler)
Lavonte David (pro bowler)
Adrian Clayborn (full time starter)
Mason Foster (full time starter)
Akeem Spence (full time starter)
Jonathan Banks (full time starter)
William Gholston (starter)

But he also drafted several guys that had good years and then flamed out (Freeman, Mike Williams, for example)

Kyle Shannahan is more qualified to be a GM than John Lynch is.

I'm sure you were all about bringing in Steve Young though lol.

That's fine if that was the case. If Lynch was our guy, he would've been hired weeks ago. The GMs that we wanted the most didn't want us, basically no GM wanted us. Lynch was the only one who wanted the job. If it happens work out, it won't be because of Jed's brilliance.
Funny how everyone who is on board with this hire are touting the 'fact' that the Niners will keep Gamble to run the draft, hire another personnel guy (or 2) and rely on Shanny Sr, for guidance and direction....

So why again did we hire Lynch when it seems like 3 or 4 other people will be doing his job?

Only as a consultant. Not a decision-maker.

Here, I will post a positive perspective:

Billick went on to say that Lynch's experience as a television analyst will be an asset for his on-the-job training as a first-year general manager. "I'm done with coaching, but if I were to go back into coaching, I'd be better for it because of the five years I spent doing games for FOX," Billick said. "Every Friday, we're in a different facility talking to players, coaches, some instances getting to sit in meetings, watching them practice, visiting with general managers. Can you imagine – I do a lot of corporate speaking – getting to sit in the boardroom with your competition and seeing what is important to them?" Peter Schrager brought up the fact that, just three weeks ago, Lynch did a production meeting with now division rival Pete Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks. "And I can imagine John, with this in the back of his mind, probably did his due diligence to kind of (ask), 'How do you do this? How do you do that?' We'll see." "You've got someone that's new at this, which is not all bad. It's kind of an outside the box, okay. Plus, I'm sure he'll lean on a guy like [Denver Broncos general manager] John Elway. John came in from the outside and (Lynch may ask), 'How did you start? What's the priority?' Putting together that structure. His eye for talent and how he's going to deal with the coaches, John and Kyle will be great with that." - See more at: http://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/103106-brian-billick-calls-john-lynch-brilliant/#sthash.BktuJasp.dpuf

LMAO. What football world do you live in? Everyone is saying this is a total boom or bust hire 100%.

Everything else is just discussion about both sides of those concerns/optimism.

Read the tweets and posts from people at ESPN, Fox sports, NFL network, Greg Cosell. The idiots who don't know much are posting garbage. But anylists, former Coaches, and pro personal are applauding it.

Kind of thinking the same thing TBH.

I agree. If the team needs to hire that many people then basically we've just hired somebody from the communications department to run business operations. That what this team really needs right now is a spokesperson. That said, it's not unusual for a team to hire director's of pro and college scouting. Perhaps that's what's going down here.

GM: Lynch (still a bad hire)
A-GM: Gamble
Director of College Personnel: Gamble
Director of Pro Personnel: TBD (Dominik?)

That's not unheard of.
