I hate it b/c he's nothing more than an alleged figure head. He's not a GM. In fact, we still need to hire a GM...or others than can do GM jobs.

Not if it works out the way it has for Denver. Elway isn't out there scouting his ass off, he leans on the personnel department for the draft while he handles a lot of heavy lifting in FA.

Its the same process as it would have been for any GM that they might have hired. Gamble will be evaluated on everything, on how he fits with the overall philosophy, the quality of his scouting reports, his past track record, how hard he works, how well he relates to the other front office staff and coaching staff.....etc.

After a few months working with the guy I'm sure Lynch will have a better idea of what sort of caliber executive he is and whether or not he wants him to remain on the staff. The scouts will be evaluated the same way and usually with a new GM you will get a few new scouts at minimum, hired after the draft.

Watch Indy in May. I bet you Ballard dumps a bunch of scouts and brings in new scouts and some new executives.

Sounds reasonable. So this draft is pretty much an interview process for Gamble and each active scout.

If u called for a head of football ops then u can't really be mad at this.

Not just the draft, the free agency period as well, the latter particularly for Gamble as he's been on the Pro side mostly.

No, same thing with Elway early on in his career. He lacked knowledge of the structure but knew football...and how has that worked out? Lynch is bright enough and confident enough to deal with guys who have experience. That is a huge step in the right direction. If you had another Jed in there being passive aggressive, smiling, tweeting...that would be a disaster. According to most reports Lynch is not a game player.

Alls well that ends well. We'll see, but I'm optimistic...as usual.

It's also practical. The 49ers are at a point in the football calendar where replacing current scouting staff with new staff may do more harm than good. You've got scouts out in the field who've had eyeballs on players and you can't afford to sacrifice that corporate knowledge right now.

I certainly hope it ends well for the 49ers, but I'm of the opinion that you don't hire somebody who is unqualified for the position. I wouldn't do in my business career and I don't think it's a good idea for the 49ers. There is a whole lot of rationalization going on right now.

I think the coaches and front office staff past and present payroll is bigger than the players.

Is bringing in Dominick and Hickey really a good idea? Feels like a recipe for too many cooks in the kitchen...

I'm obviously still trying to dig this hire. After the past couple years I think some of us have a right to be skeptical. The Tomsula hire was a "shocker" type and that didn't work out at all.
