He kept his home in So Calif and never seemed totally vested with putting in all the hours and time a GM needed to turn the organization around.

The truth is he is a total unknown. We just have to wait and see. Obviously there will be mistakes etc, but this has a boom or bust feel. Like weve said - how they fill out the rest of the office over time is key.

I'm pessimistic as always because Jed is a proven s**t show, but Kyle wanted this. Jed is probably thinking wth do I have to lose at this point.

Not to beat a dead horse, i cant help but wonder the effect Paraag has on more seasoned execs wanting to come to the 49ers.
Just because Elway does a great job, so will Lynch? It obviously doesn't work that way. It's a risky move, but that's ok...the whole GM position is a secondary thought anyway at the 49ers org.
The more important spot is the HC. We'll soon know if Quinn + Ryan made Shanahan good or the other way around.

It's a new start...hoping for the best (what choice do we have).

I've been out of the loop since the hiring. Can anybody provide me with a link or explanation of Lynch's connections? We already know Shanny has them and if it's true that Lynch also has connections, the hiring would make a little more sense.

Any idea who is in charge of player personnel and free agency?

I was down on Terry Donahue as GM, his record speaks for itself. The organization should have hired him as a head coach. His UCLA teams played fast even though undersized, and to use a Bill Walsh, his teams beat you to the punch.
Super interesting what Brian Billick had to say about John Lynch, especially regarding his weekly meetings with GM's during his television prep:

So now we about to tap the Buccaneers franchise for their personnel? Lynch, possibly that GM guy, and now Shelton Quarles.

Rumors are they are bringing in Dominik and maybe even Hickey and also keeping Gamble. Could be the deepest FO we have had in a while.

One thing for SURE!!!

Absolutely Nobody saw this coming.

"...the surprise hire of John Lynch as GM in San Francisco."

If I asked you, if you had a cracked out drug-addicted Jim Irsay and a Silver-spoon-fed Jed York, which owner would you best guess to pick John Lynch as their next GM?

You just can't make this stuff up...

But why do you hate this so much? Without even seeing the personnel hires? It's clear Lynch won't be making the lions share of personnel decisions. Let's see what kind of organization he builds then hate it?

To be fair to all perspectives, there where way more experienced candidates out there. It would provide fans with a sense of stability etc. This is really left field. cant deny it. People's negativity is that Jed again made a move that just doesn't make much sense when you consider all the options.

Lets say Jed fired, Chip, Trent, and Paraag. Now he hired Ballard.....Ballard hires his guys.... that iss really how most teams are run. So I get it. I'm not saying this wont lead us to wins, but i get people saying F-it were doomed etc.

I'm hearing #49ers GM John Lynch will give assistant GM Tom Gamble chance through the draft to prove he should remain with the organization. Per MM

How will he even know if Gamble had a good draft or not? When will he know by?

Wow, that Myles Garrett guy is pretty good and starting from day 1. Great job, you can stay!

if they actually pick Garrett, i'd already consider it a win. unlike baalke with is Armstead over Peters pick.

Once again, the key words there are "through the draft." Not that Gamble will be running the draft or that he will have final say over anything. Gamble like the rest of the scouts will be evaluated. NFL teams usually change out scouts after the draft and free agency, in May.

That is all that Maiocco is saying.
