Steve Young on the state of the 49ers

Joe would have gone longer than 2 years if he had of stayed at the 49ers. He said that personally.

Trading for the best linebacker of the 90s in Derreck Thomas would have given us the greatest defence of all time. Period.

Meanwhile we could have used the draft to find Joe Montanas long term replacement.

A young Quarterback by the name of Brett Favre was picked at 33 in 1991 by the Atlanta Falcons. he could have been useful for the next 15 years and replaced Steve Young.

Steve Bono was more than adequate as back up in the period it took to get the new quarterback (Favre) up to speed learning from Montana.

With Thomas, Haley and Harris as linebackers; we would have only needed to score 3 points to win most games (assuming our defence didn't score itself).

No defense is only gonna give up 3 points a game.

So were we gonna go ahead and just steal Ron Wolf then to guarantee getting Favre?.....fire Seifert to make sure we keep Holmgren?
Holmgren should have got the SF 49er Head Coaching job after Bill Walsh not George Seifert.

I think most people agree with that looking in the rear view mirror.

Holmgren became the team's offensive coordinator and served from 1989 to 1991. In this stretch, Joe Montana won his two MVP awards and had his best season in 1989. During his tenure with San Francisco, the 49ers posted a 71-23-1 (74.7%) regular season record to reach the postseason each year except 1991.

Imagine the Holgren with Montana and then with Favre combination as 49ers for 15 years.

It could have been anything.
Holmgren is one of my 3 favorite offensive minds of all time (along with Bill Walsh and Mike Shanahan). Of course knowing what happened, he would have been the choice. However in January of 1989 he was a QB coach that had never called plays in the NFL. Still to get Favre in this fantasy, you need Ron Wolf. So do we blowout Policy and McVay?
Or Policy calls up a favour. Which Carmen seemed to be able to do at will at that stage. Mile Holgren should have got the job and if he did we would be sitting here talking about the niners having won 10 or more Superbowls.
Fantasy scenario #2: we should have just forced George to retire after SB29 and hired Shanahan. Then we would have had Terrell Davis and a ground game and world have not got totally outcoached every time facing Holmgren and GB. In this scenario, we definitely win in 1995 because we have a ground game along with the number 1 offense and number 3 defense.
I like your thinking. But Mike Holmgren was in our grasp at that stage and the choice of Seifert over Holmgren at the time was extremely close.

you could just see opposing teams shoot themselves in the foot because they knew Montana was going to come back against them in the last moments.
Nevertheless, the WCO allowed backup quarterbacks to prosper such as Bono, and Grbac.
Steve Young had the tenacity
to keep working at his game and not give up and is one of the greatest of all time.
Now that the system is back, and the coach to push buttons, let's see who the next great one is.

Just re-watched the San Diego v 49ers Super bowl, man that was a massacre. Steve just ran and passed over Bobby Ross's defense like it was a high school cheerleading team. Mike Shanahan really just called everything right in that game, the Charger's couldn't stop anybody that day. To this day, after Harbaugh was let go, I could see visions of Colin doing what Steve did in the 1994 super bowl. Yeah, but if *if's* and *but's* were candy and nuts.... <sigh>

Come on CJ!
I wish we were talking about the 49ers modern day quareterbacks in the way we talk about these old guys.

Our modern day QB's weren't that bad. Jeff Garcia, Alex Smith and Colin are still talked about, just not in the Niner zone anymore. These QB's were good for us and one even got us into the super bowl. Remember we have *three* QB's in the Hall of Fame. I don't think you can name many other teams with 3. Seadderall? Lambs? Cardinals?
You can't put Jeff Garcia, Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick in the same breath as Joe Montana and even Steve Young.
