Is it time to trade Joe Staley?

Lets just start a jed cut the payroll wet dream thread then we can stick all topics like this in there.

No. You don't trade staley, you don't let hyde walk, you don't let Reid walk. The only real player that should be restructured is ward. With jimmy g the team goes from dumpster fire to contender and you need to keep those fringe players until you know you can get someone better to stay competitive.

Why create holes when you don't need to..

How do you go from staley to hyde to reid to ward. keep joe. meh the rest.

I don't believe the team will trade him unless he gets beat out. Who is going to replace him? Brown? He might not have the mobility, consistency, drive, or availability to replace Staley. Joe finished the year highly rated. He is still one of the most consistent and maybe more importantly respected players on the team. Not to mention his contract is a great bargain. Unless his play falls off a cliff he has 2 years left at least on the team in my opinion. Next year the team will probably decide if Trent Brown can take over the left side. Either way they will probably sign or draft a LT in 2019 to groom. Then if Staley gets beat out he either gets traded or retires. With his athleticism and savvy though, I think he could play at a high level till 36-38.

I think the difference is that most of the time, those 49ers teams were stacked and had depth ready to go to replace those players. Hell the main reason there is a salary cap is because of how stacked those 49ers teams were. Right now they don't have any who could take over for Staley, perhaps Brown but his long term future remains undetermined with his contract up after this upcoming season.

If they draft a left tackle, or even a right tackle early then perhaps the countdown starts on Staley but for the time being, he's cheap, he's still one of the better tackles in football and it seems his position should be pretty secure for at least the next year if not longer.

probably worth pointing out that when Lott and Craig went, their replacements were nowhere near their heirs. It just isnt that easy.

No absolutely not. We finally have a QB now for the first time in a long, long time. So why would we trade good O Linemen away? We need as many of those as we can have. He is probably more on the back end of his career now. But he still has some good years left. You don't trade away quality protection now that you finally found a quality QB.

Joe Staley is one of the all time great 49ers. I wouldn't trade him ever. He will know when to walk away, just like Cowboy. Sure hope he gets a ring so he can retire like Randy Cross, right on the field with confetti flying.
