Taking a look at everyone we brought in, it's going to be pretty interesting watching some of these battles. For the first year, we didn't take someone who would not be able to play in 2016. Even though our third rounder this year did get hurt last year, it was early enough to where they expect him ready for camp, so we'll have a crap-ton of competition at DB. Short-sighted? Do you remember when Parys Haralson was listed as the starter, but Aldon Smith played all the passing downs? Teams always list the guys who are in a first down defense the starters. It's why guys like nickel backs, who play most of the game, are considered bench players on the depth chart.

This. A nose tackle plays an average of like 12-18 snaps a game but he's a "starter"

Right. And if you get the lead and other team is going pass happy you might be seeing a lot of nickel/dime packages the majority of the game period.

If this was towards me I meant along with the lines the slot/4th CB can get starter type of snaps, along with Buck/Tartt. Ray-Rays a starter for example but Tartt can easily get more snaps than him... Blair more snaps than say Brooks of were in a 4 DL set most of the game.

Conclusion.. In our hybrid D, pay attention to snaps not whose the "starter" . Tis all.

My depth changes by the end of the year are

Tartt over bethea in base defense and either blair or defo over dial. Bethea is scaring me right now. Hopefully he was taking the preseason off because he looked like a guy who lost a couple of steps out there.

I don't understand why Dial starts over Buckner and why on earth Eli starts over Tank.

Then Tank should be starting. While Eli's run defense has gotten much better he's nowhere near the run defender Tank is. So I'm just not understanding the wisdom here.

The powers that be must've thought harold is a better run/pass/rusher opposite of brooks than tank. Whoever is opposite brooks will probably drop into coverage more often than not during a pass play in the base defense.

I'm surprised they see harold as a better run defender than Carradine.

Actually, that's comforting to know. I'd hate to find out that Kelly & Co. Thinks that Dial and Eli are better than Buckner and Tank.

I'm not sure tank is better than eli as an OLB

and it's a matter of time for blair and defo to take snaps from dial

I have one last change before the end of the season, R Robinson for Brock. If Robinson can stay out of trouble, he's the real deal. Brock has a bad habit of playing too far off giving up easy completions every once in a while.

I can see Robinson shutting people down. He's potentially the best corner I've seen in several years in a 49er uniform.
