Oh I don't know, certainly not comparing the two we have to the situation, but I remember having Montana and Young on the same team. The exception that proved the rule?

Usually being the operative word. The niners don't have Rodgers, Brady or Brees so they don't have an elite QB. These guys have to pick up their games or the team will be mediocre on offense. The reason I think Kelly might play both is because neither is very scary on their own unless they make that jump. My guess is that Gabbert plays a more steady but less explosive game, while CK shows a renewed dynamism. His leaner look is somewhat interesting too. Did he veer away from the weight room in favor of more work on passing and learning the nuances?

Or maybe he just hasn't had as much time in the weight room while rehabbing three injuries.

yes but Walsh didn't run young out for a series to change it up. If your starter can't get it done then you replace him.the league already caught up to the wildcat B...s..

Yeah but the Dolphins were mean when they ran it.
As much as it seems like Gabbert is a near-lock, the more Kaepernick has a chance to practice, the more chance he has to potentially close the gap between him and Gabbert. Kelly seems determined to give them each a 100% fair chance to win the gig in the pre-season/TC. Those are about 2 months away. That's a lot of time for CK to readjust.

I like the competition right now, because I think it forces the players to elevate their efforts in every way. CK has to study even more. Train fundamentals and technique more. Gabbert has to continue working his footwork to improve accuracy.

I hope we're in for a great fight because I want to go into the season feeling good about QB again.

I haven't felt good about a QB since Garcia left.

Me either, and I was disappointed by him after Montana and Young. Those were the days for sure.

To this day, I really never understood why we didn't bother joining the Eli Manning-Philip Rivers-Ben Rothlisburger draft day trade scenario..

Even if Garcia was still pretty good (which I never thought he was), I thought that we shoulda try and landed a QB that Dennis Erickson liked between the 3.. I remember reading in my 49ers Report that he really had like Rivers a lot..

Of course, Donahue, still pissed from the days Erickson and the Washington State Cougars for upsetting his #1 UCLA team with Troy Aikman just brushed off the idea and instead, just drafted RASHAUN WOODS!!!!

You (and I) will feel good if our QB this year gives us a winning season again.

The guy is skinny! I would think it is intentional...though who knows?

Wasn't he in a boot and a sling? If he would have kept his normal calorie intake the dude would have looked like Trent Brown.

Maybe Patton can give Kap some yoga lessons

I wouldn't be surprised if Kelly played both QBs just to create more film for defenses to worry about. They could be pretty creative this year and it wouldn't really matter much...low expectations and all.

I like this idea. If someone can platoon QBs successfully is it not Chip Kelly?

Looney wasn't great, but was much better than Devey/Pears/Martin at anything, even wiping ass I can imagine... when they let those guys go, you knew coaches didn't know wtf they were doing

I go back to the DeBerg / Montana QB controversy (yes young man there was one) and I cannot recall a worse starting O Lineman than Devey. Looney would have been better but I don't think he is starting material.

Martin, Devey and Pears were awful. Baalke got too cute thinking M. Martin and B. Thomas would be able to be plugged in for Iupati and Boone. The plan was a disaster. But the Garrett pick tells me he gets it. Then two 5th round tackles to compete against Pears. All good.

Seems like players are more focused under Kelly / new staff and with much more enthusiasm as well... as if they believe they can win games instead of hoping they can win games (under Tomsula).
