Yeah, epic post. Stuff like this is invaluable for new fans like myself who need a hand knowing what to look for. Really want to know who our new coach is and what he's gonna bring to get more of the potential out of the guys.

There is no doubt that 49ers fans love dem some QB controversy. It is almost as good as the soaps on Telemundo. Almost. Kaep has a lot to prove. I think if we are being fair, we can all say the dude works very hard as an athlete and has recognized some of his faults as a pocket passer. I guess the question I have is what is he going to do this offseason? In my mind, he has to get healthy, his head right, and has to see where he fits in with our new coach. Indeed, this might be it for him....

But I want to spin a scenario for you. Tom Coughlin is a disciplinarian. He brings the "whoop", you bring the "ass." Yes, he has softened, but he is still hard as nails. He sits down with Kaep, works with him, and gets him "on the path". Look, I think many will say Harbs was the QB whisper. Perhaps in the sense of developing moxy, but has he really developed his QBs? Look at the growth of Alex Smith after Harbs with Andy Reid. I think Harbs is a good vitamin B shot, but someone like Coughlin could be the guy that brutally runs through the fundamentals with Kaep.

I can just see it now...

Kaep gets sacked. And Coughlin ain't having it.

That's hilarious, I posted some Mickey pics in the Coughlin thread. Great minds think alike I guess.
My choices are Hyde if he can stay healthy and Tartt.
Quinton Patton
Jimmie Ward @FS after another Reid concussion
Trenton Brown
Shaun Draughn
Surprise Pick: Tank Carridine @ outside linebacker w/ 8.5 sacks

Agree! NC--you have almost 50 players in the retain list and very few questionable guys would be missed much.

Here's my guess as to a much too early depth chart--breakout players in bold (a couple of surprises?):

QB: Gabbert, Kaepernick, Rookie
RB: Hyde, Draughn, Davis, Hayne, Rookie
FB: Miller
TE: Celek, McDonald, Bell, Anderson (HB/FB)
LT: Staley, Boone
LG: Boone, Tiller, Thomas(?)
C: FA, Kilgore, Martin
RG: Kilgore, Martin
RT: Brown, Rookie
WRa: Boldin, Smelter, Ellington, Campbell(?)
WRb: T Smith, Patton, Anderson(?)

NT: Williams, Purcell, FA
DE: Armstead, Dial, FA, Rookie, Jerod-Eddie (many don't like but he's versatile)
OLB: High draft pick, Lynch, Harold, Lemonier, Armstrong, FA?
ILB: Bowman, Hodges, Skov, midround draft pick (not many available higher)
S: Reid, Ward, Tartt, McCray, draft pick, FA?
CBa Acker, Reaser, Davis
CBb: Brock, Johnson, Cromartie

QB: Agreed with your order too
RB: I think Harris beats out Draughn or we also keep Draughn as well over a rookie for RB2/ST
FB: Duh
TE: Yup, although, if we stay with the WCO and there IS an Eifert-like TE out there, don't be surprised if Baalke goes BPA
LT: It would not surprise me if we went T with our first pick
LG: Like it too but Tiller will be starting at one of the G spots (most likely LG b/c Boone will go for the pay day)
C: Love it!
RG: I don't see Kilgore playing G in any fashion. We seem to be going power again with the big boys in Tiller, Brown, Davis, etc. Staley can play both and the jury is out on Kilgore at C in power.
RT: Yup, plus the possible "guranateed" return of Anthony Davis
WRX: Smith, White plus rookie (this is your field-stretching position and punt returners; think, Tyler Lockett)
WRY: Boldin, Ellington and Anderson (shifty, short-area quickness)
WRZ: PFF has us taking a WR with the first overall pick (Josh Doctson). The big-bodied XWR is the biggest need on offense. I'm with you in thinking Smelter could be that guy but Baalke shouldn't "count" on that. We need that Megatron or Kelvin Benjamin badly!

NT: No FA needed as we'll retain Dorsey and he and Dial are backup NT's too
DE: This could be our biggest FA signing ala Justin Smith
OLB: This is our biggest need (WILL) on defense. This too could be a big FA signing or first pick in the draft.
ILB: Love both Bowman and Hodges, just not in Mangini's scheme. Tartt will most likely be moved to the robber ILB/S role. Rookie with big-time speed, range and cover skills
S: Yup
CBa This could be the 2nd or 3rd biggest need...a dynamic CB
CBb: Yup.

I like. Don't count him out just yet. He and Harold are going to be battling this off season big time...plus, don't be surprised if a pass rushing OLB is also brought in through the draft and in FA.

My pleasure...once we've wrapped up the new head coach and staff, I'll have a better gauge on who might break out next year on offense and defense.
Breakout players for 2016: Tartt, Hayne, Kaepernick...
Dahl
Dark horse

Ward, Tartt and Dontae Johnson will step it up in a big way , once we grab a couple of effective pass rushers, to work with Lynch, Carradine and Armstead , it will make them more effective

Harris is a good add, but I'm not sure they are willing to move on from Davis yet and Draughn is a very good receiving threat.

Not sure whether they should rely on Dorsey. He's been healthy three years out of eight so far in his career.

I believe the niners will take a TE in the mid rounds...someone like Bryce Williams in the 4th. McDonald is still too much of a question and neither Bell or Anderson have proven themselves, though I like them. Busta could be moved to FB/HB.

Keep going back and forth on who they draft in the first. With Cleveland apparently dropping Manziel they will likely take Goff and I'm not in love with Lynch...so DL, OLB or OT are obvious needs. I could see them taking Buckner as the best player in a position of need, taking one of the top OT's in the second round and trying to pick up an FA OLB. There are DL in the second but I just don't see many OLBs so they could take a guy like Ogbah if he could be converted to OLB.

Sigh...all depending on who the coach is and what he will run.

Well done, NC. My break outs are very simple.

Trenton Brown ...huge yr. He finally gets it. Plus it takes 5 seconds just to walk around the guy.

Celek, McD, and Bell, all have breakout yrs. In other words, our one best position on the team is ....TE

Draughn, Hayne, La Juan....all with big yrs. Hyde is already there. Our RBs will be as good as our TEs. Picking RBs from someone else's shid list has worked well for us and they have to be working at walmart, selling cars, or well, whatever.

Lastly, Purcell. Huge yr, and instead of sometimes, ALL the TIME. There are times, in some games, where this kid looks like a 10 yr pro. Then he gets a bit drifty, or maybe confused on his assignment. Not sure, but man does he ever have the "it" factor when he is in zone. Keeping him in zone is the trick. I think he does fine.

Unlike others, our DBs remain a ?? for me. That probably means the scheme, and if it takes two yrs to learn a D scheme....then it probably isn't worth learning. I could be wrong, but does every new guy on D have to have 2 yrs to learn what to do? That just sounds stupid to me. I have no feel for our DBs, so I assume it IS scheme. Maybe if we upgraded at DC I would know more or feel better.
