The Kap ship has sailed IMO.
Who ever is hired will be fully aware that the FO fully intends to trade or release him.

yes... people keep talking about his cap hit, but fail to realize we're ~25-30 million under the cap next season even with Kap. Why not at least keep him through training camp. If he doesn't work out trade/cut him before he season starts

Yes, because we have the money to keep him and in the end he probably provides the best opportunity to win at this point. Most General Manager's know that making a big splash in free agency is a mistake, and Baalke has never made these types of moves, so I doubt Baalke will go out and spend a lot of money on a high profile name. The salary hit, therefore, shouldn't be a large concern to the team. With the 7th pick of the draft I doubt we're going to get Goff (the only qb in this draft who is probably ready to start right away). so I don't expect to see a rookie starting. Given that we are still 30 million dollars under the cap with Kaepernick signed on, I think the next head coach, whoever it is, decides that they might as well keep him and at let him compete with Blaine Gabbert.
I don't know if he will succeed or last past next season, but I think that will be the team's line of thinking, and I think it is the most logical.
