John Taylor tidbits:
- Historically great against the Rams (even in '94 and '95 when he slowed down)
- Only WR in NFL history with two 90+ yard TDs in one game
- Longest receiving TD by a Niner (97 yards eclipsing Rice's 96)
- Only 49er to score a TD in two games against the Giants in 1990
- 76 yard TD against Eagles in '89 blew the comeback wide open
- Not very fast in a timed 40, but has had tons of long RAC plays
- Best career game yardage - 286 yards (Rice 289, Flipper Anderson 336 all time best)
- Scored a TD on Deion Sanders thrown by Steve Bono
- Was rumored to be feared more than Rice by several teams
At the end of the day, what is undeniable is that Taylor was very talented and did a lot while not working remotely as hard as Rice. Was well known to be a bit of an underachiever, but at the same time not everyone necessarily would benefit from a Rice work ethic.
When you really think about it, Taylor was very much a Rice clone in body size, and strengths. Alvin Harper was different from Michael Irvin, Cris Carter was different than Randy Moss, Gary Clark/Ricky Sanders/Art Monk were all different, etc. etc. Despite the strong similarities, they were very good complements to each other.
Outside of Rice and TO, in the modern day since 1980, you would have to put Taylor as the best 49er WR.
Just to put the OP in check, it was said by Phil Simms and Giants' fans numerous times that Mike Sherrard (our #3 from the Holmgren glory days) was easily the best WR he played with. So what would that tell you about Taylor going there?
I guess the only real knock on JT was that maybe he didn't show up in big games with quite the consistency as Rice -- but we're talking about MFing Jerry Rice.
Would be interesting to hear from our older Niner fans how they felt about Flipper Anderson and Henry Ellard -- IMHO, a close #2 to Rice/Taylor. Flipper was Rice and Ellard was Taylor in how they were utilized if I recall correctly.
