John Taylor tidbits:

  • Historically great against the Rams (even in '94 and '95 when he slowed down)
  • Only WR in NFL history with two 90+ yard TDs in one game
  • Longest receiving TD by a Niner (97 yards eclipsing Rice's 96)
  • Only 49er to score a TD in two games against the Giants in 1990
  • 76 yard TD against Eagles in '89 blew the comeback wide open
  • Not very fast in a timed 40, but has had tons of long RAC plays
  • Best career game yardage - 286 yards (Rice 289, Flipper Anderson 336 all time best)
  • Scored a TD on Deion Sanders thrown by Steve Bono
  • Was rumored to be feared more than Rice by several teams

At the end of the day, what is undeniable is that Taylor was very talented and did a lot while not working remotely as hard as Rice. Was well known to be a bit of an underachiever, but at the same time not everyone necessarily would benefit from a Rice work ethic.

When you really think about it, Taylor was very much a Rice clone in body size, and strengths. Alvin Harper was different from Michael Irvin, Cris Carter was different than Randy Moss, Gary Clark/Ricky Sanders/Art Monk were all different, etc. etc. Despite the strong similarities, they were very good complements to each other.

Outside of Rice and TO, in the modern day since 1980, you would have to put Taylor as the best 49er WR.

Just to put the OP in check, it was said by Phil Simms and Giants' fans numerous times that Mike Sherrard (our #3 from the Holmgren glory days) was easily the best WR he played with. So what would that tell you about Taylor going there?

I guess the only real knock on JT was that maybe he didn't show up in big games with quite the consistency as Rice -- but we're talking about MFing Jerry Rice.

Would be interesting to hear from our older Niner fans how they felt about Flipper Anderson and Henry Ellard -- IMHO, a close #2 to Rice/Taylor. Flipper was Rice and Ellard was Taylor in how they were utilized if I recall correctly.
One of my favorite JT games was the 1992 "no punt" game vs Buffalo. Jerry gets knocked out in the first quarter with a concussion. JT goes on to have a 5 catch 110+ yard 2 td game. Niners ultimately lose the game(f**king Cofer), but rack up 598 yards of offense in one of the best games I've ever seen.
Besides 1988 John Taylor never had more than three fumbles in a season. in 300 something career catches he had 43 touchdowns. Op is a stone cold foo.

Jack snow Preston Dennard Harold Jackson I all killed us back in the day.
The OP sent me this link in support of his views. Good article.

That was a great read but I didnt see anything about trying to trade Taylor to TB for a 10th round pick ...This OP just trolling away talking sh*t ...Any real 49er fan knows how good Taylor was and what he meant to our team ...

So much this. To the OP, just what games were you watching????

The '87 game against Cincy, Montana threw a bomb over middle to Taylor that he either couldn't locate or maybe catch up to that would have maybe gotten them into position to win game.

A few minutes later sf gets ball back with a few seconds to play and Rice catches the winning score.

He probably saw that game and wrote off JT. Or maybe he watched the '94 season exclusively when the knee injury slowed him down.

Honestly, I don't think he watched s**t. I think his whole deal was starting s**t and I honestly think it had more to do with Rice than JT. I remember arguing with him about Rice and Wes Welker a couple of months ago. He was going on and on how the Slot WR was a harder position then a flanker and was basically trying to let on that Welker was better then Rice. I know, really cringe worthy s**t.
thats hilarious would you rather have a 6 2 cyborg or 5 8 inch midget waterbug.

It's too bad that JT was really satisfied being just a #2 WR to the best team and organization back then.

Had he been a little selfish, complainer, and started to ask for more money or be traded to another team, JT woulda put up MORE numbers that we can all possibly think of.

the interesting part to this is that, was JT's humbleness and being an ultimate teamate HOLDS HIM BACK from being in the HOF???

His numbers would have been HUGE if Joe/Steve didn't have Jerry to throw to.
He was great when he came back in 1999 along with Charles Haley...
