Free Agency
Of the five teams that spent the most money during 2015's free-agency period, for example, only one -- the New York Jets -- finished with a winning record. According to Cardinals reporter Mike Jurecki, of the 86 players chosen for the most recent Pro Bowl, only two -- Arizona's Mike Iupati (who was signed away from the 49ers) and the Jets' Darrelle Revis -- were free-agent acquisitions last year. http://www.sacbee.com/sports/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/article64843642.html#storylink=cpy

Pre & Post-June 1st, 2015 (May 12th) consideration cuts could be, if needed:
Colin Kaepernick - The 49ers can trade or release Kaepernick. His 2016 cap figure is $15,890,753. If they trade or release him as a pre-June 1 cut, they would see savings of $8,493,494 in 2016, while being on the hook for $7,397,259 in 2016 dead money. If they elect to designate him June 1st cut, they would incur a 2016 dead money hit of $2,465,753, with the remaining $4.9M in 2017. This would result in 2016 salary cap savings of $13.425M after June 1.
Ahmad Brooks - If he is cut without the June 1st designation, the 49ers would save $6,501,250 in cap space, and incur a dead money hit of $3,197,500 in 2016. If they were to designate him a June 1 cut, they would save $7.35 million, while taking a $2,348,750 dead money hit in 2016, and the rest in 2017. He is currently signed through 2017.
Antoine Bethea - Could very well be released. The 49ers would save $3.75M with a pre-June 1 cut, and take on a dead money hit of $2.5M. If he was released with a June 1st designation, they would save $5M in cap space, and his dead money hits would be $1.25M in 2016 and $1.25M in 2017.
Glenn Dorsey - Dorsey is signed through next season, with a cap hit of the fact that he only has a $2,766,668 salary cap hit. Given that he is coming off a torn ACL, any release would be that much more difficult. Instead, it seems likely he opens 2016 training camp on the PUP list.
Erik Pears - Candidate for release. The 49ers need to figure out an upgrade at right tackle, and it very well include the return of Anthony Davis. Pears has a $2.35M cap hit in 2016, the final year of his two-year contract. If the 49ers release him, they would eat $250,000 in dead money, and save $2.1M in cap space.
Joe Staley - Candidate for trade or release. The 49ers would need to release him before a $4M option bonus comes due on April, and would need to be a post-June 1 designation to avoid an ugly cap hit. It seems unlikely that Staley gets released or traded at this point, but I've seen crazier things happen.

Thresholds on what the 49ers give out in deals (AB81Rules): See Post #320 http://www.49erswebzone.com/forum/niners/184141-2016-team-needs/page22/

2016 Team Needs per PFF Cumulative Position Groups:

2017 Team Needs:
  • #1 is health (49 players on I.R. in 2.5 years is pathetic)
  • FQB for Kaepernick (may not start until 2018)
  • True ZWR for Patton
  • Power RB to back up Hyde
  • Physically strong LG for Beadles
  • T to push Staley and Brown with the skill set to take over in a year or two
  • Physically strong FA C to compete with Kilgore (remember, Kelly is ALL about the inside runs like Harbaugh, Singletary, Nolan and Raye before him )
  • 100% healthy NT (Williams/Dorsey/FA/Rookie)
  • WILL edge rusher (no brainer)
  • Top talent ILB to compete with Bowman/Ray-Ray and add REAL depth (Bellore & Wilhoite are ST players only)
  • Dynamic Returner
  • Personnel Moves: Ward & Robinson exclusively outside, Redmond in the slot. Tartt and maybe Reid at S. Or, Ward & Tartt at S (ideal), Robinson outside and draft another press CB to compete with Johnson.
  • Coaching/Scheme Changes: O'Neil is fired and a veteran DC is hired (Bowles, etc.); Kelly adapts to our power personnel more and morphs his system together. More 2 back sets, lead FB in short yardage and goal line situations, less 3 WR sets (80+% right now), more snaps under C, etc. Passing game is great; could be better in the RZ.
  • Cornerstone players: Need one at each position to raise the units particularly at QB, ZWR, OL, DL, WILL & ILB (maybe CB/S) + Returner

Great list & breakdown
Gaskins??? What has he done. Why are we happy picking up every others teams garbage or players of the street?? Same goes with draughn. Not good enough.

No worries. Just letting you know.

Yeah Boone just had some micro tears in his MCL. It's a few weeks to heal. No biggie but he's done for the season.

Great post
Top Tier Needs:NEW OWNER and Coaching staff maybe even a new GM
Agreed. Offensive line and pass rusher are the biggest needs. I don't know what to think of Kap and Gabbert. Is the sub-par QB play simply a product of Geeps poor designs and play calling? His play calls have no rhythm or flow like you see other teams have. I''m guessing you aren't as sold on Goff as most are on here? I don't watch college ball so I just go by highlights, but if he is the top rated player on the board when we pick, I wouldn't mind them taking hi as the guy. After missing out on Rodgers for Smith and Jake Plummer for Druckenmiller I hope this front office gets it right
I'd like to see some Oline , LB and D-line help in FA. I think Torry Smiths money could have been better used this last year too. Ted Ginn would have been much cheaper and brought the same one dimension that Smith does.(just my opinion)

Oline, oline, oline, WR, te, RB.
You can have all the talent in the world brought here, but until the coaching changes we will still suck ass.

Truth. No doubt.
Top tier needs.... competent coordinators. Tomsula will likely be back next year. He can win supporters by hiring a decent OC and DC.

Chryst is a terrible play caller. He's decent in terms of overall philosophy, but doesn't call good plays for the down and distance. He's too bent on being unpredictable.

Mangini is also too bent on being unpredictable. He does a decent job of disguising coverages and making QBs really think, but when you can't generate a pass rush the coverage inevitably will fail. More damning is the piss poor run defense. There is just no excuse for this.

After that, our needs are as follows:

DE/OLB/ILB - We just need to add a stud to the front 7. We lost P. Willis and A. Smith. We need a stud that offenses have to account for. Someone who can bring a pass rush and stop the run.

OT - A. Davis will probably return. But Staley is aging and Boone is a FA. We need someone who can play OT. My ideal scenario would be to draft a RT early. Move A. Davis to RG. Retain Boone as LG.

OC - Kilgore is better than Martin, but even he was never great. I'd prefer to go for a veteran here. We need someone powerful who can recognize blitzes and stunts and call out the right protections.

WR - I like Smith and Patton, but we need a big bodied possession receiver that can take over for Boldin.

Big-Bodied WR? what do yo think Smelter is for? Smelter also has some speed too.
