This. I was thinking the same thing. Teams already know he most likely will get cut before April 1st so why waste trading for him when they can simply bid for his services once he is cut? The 49ers effed up by not trading him before the November 3rd deadline a couple weeks ago.
Can we restructure the deal so we take some more of the cap hit to increase Kap's value in a trade? This would be equivalent to sending Kap and money to another team for a better draft pick. We aren't going to be competitive for a few years anyways, so I can't think of a better use of our cap than doing stuff like this and signing 2-3 at lented young free agents to front loaded deals.

As it stands now, I think Kaepernick is worth a 4th round pick or maybe conditional future 2nd/3rd based on various performance escalators (not just playing time). Alex Smith was coming off one of his best seasons when we traded him and we got a little lucky the Chiefs didn't realize his stats were inflated by having a ridiculously good supporting cast.
KC will trade for him!

Here's from the link i posted on the last page

The battle, though, might come around April 1. That's when Kaepernick's contract vests if he's healthy and on the roster. But if he can't pass a physical by then -- which may or may not be the case depending on who does the physical and where he is in his rehab -- the intrigue begins. Does that mean the team is on the hook for his $11.9M salary that is guaranteed for injury? Or if they release him and he plays for someone else (a team would offset the amount the Niners pay on his salary) is that enough to minimize what San Francisco has to pay? If there is a debate regarding the money, it'll likely end up in a grievance.

That said, if Kaepernick is traded, the issue of his 2016 salary would go away because his new team would pay it. That may be the best option for all parties. There is, still, a slim chance he could play for the 49ers next year. But as we know from this year's trade deadline, there is a market for him elsewhere.

Also for all the people saying he has no value, stop being ridiculous. This is a QB driven league, either you have a QB or are looking for one. In a bad year for QBs in the draft and no QBs in FA, teams wont have the luxury of saying "oh well, lets wait until next year." More than a couple coaches will look at Kaepernick, see the upside and go "hey I can fix him!"

A guy like Chip Kelly for example will be on borrowed time if his team rebuild doesnt work, he'll be less concerned about draft picks that can help 2-3 years down the road vs getting a starting QB.

With Gamble having close ties to Chip, I can see that further facilitating a deal.

The interest will be there, my guess is that a mid round draft pick would be reasonable in a trade...a 3rd or 4th round pick which I'd be fine with.

So much THIS
Kap's trade value may have also played a part in the putting him on IR pending surgery. Go ahead now and get him healthy so that he's ready to go by the spring. 49ers should get no less than what they got for Alex.

If you ask me a third rounder, if you ask Baalke a seventh?

Kap would have to accept a restructure. No way in hell he accepts a restructure to be traded and he honesty shouldn't. Three options here; trade Kap straight up, release Kap and take the dead money hit, or do an injury settlement and then release him. If I'm Kap, I'm taking the injury settlement and hitting FA.
4th rounder or lower. Basically first dib for team that covets him, so they won't be fighting the market. He would most likely be cut by the Niners anyway.
Cleveland for Mack and their 4th or 5th rd.

Well, if you want to call say a 4th round pick value then be my guest. LOL. That to me is not value, value to me is like an Alex Smith type trade.

In that context, he may be worth a 4th, but not a 3rd. 4th or lower.

He will absolutely be traded for a 2nd or 3rd.

"Teams know that Alex Smith will be cut so why bother trading for him?"

Teams will bother trading for a guy because if you wait for him to get cut, you now have to compete with a myriad of teams for his services and there is zero guarantee that he chooses you. If a team REALLY needs a QB and they like Kaepernick, trading away a 3rd or 4th rounder isnt going to stop them.

Mack is opting out of his deal, not sure how you expect them to trade an FA.
