What words best describe the 49ers fan base and how are we viewed by the NFL community?

Pretentious and entitled, yet faithful and optimistic. A lot consider us stuck in the past because we refer to our Super Bowl glory days in the 80s all the time, when we boasted the best QB and WR to play the game. The late 90s and early 2000s were rough for the team, but the fans stuck it out with unbridled optimism. Our fan base has had issues with knowing when to get loud and when to be silent, even though they tell you when to do each on the jumbotron. Our stadium is not really a place opposing teams' fans feel real comfortable in, because of all the recent violence. We are probably 60% die hards, 30% trendy/fairweather, and 10% A-holes, which is about the standard rate in the NFL.

fans who also lived through joe thomas, oj simpson and holly wood henderson are a little more grounded in my opinion than the ones who think the 49ers just became a franchise during the 1994 season

if you are talking about young,, the only reason i was part of that crowd is i simply thought young was a qb who could win lots of passing titles but never could win the big game, i thought montana still had it, i thought by getting rid of young, we could get derrick thomas who would fix our defense, thus not having to spend lots of money to buy a defense which we had to in 94 while grooming bono to take over for joe. my thought process back then was simply doing what i felt was best for the team , on both sides of the ball at the present time and into the future. sorry but i while i love young i will always think they should have followed my plan . oh did i mention some of niner fan base is also arrogant---- cciowa

Exactly the same as the Eels, 4 premierships in the 80s including 3 in a row 81-83, we were the team of the 80s in League, and have been living in the 80s ever since, some think those years spoilt us, everybody just expected it to keep happening, probably the same as the 9ers.

Whiners. We got some great fans just like any fan base, but our fan base is very dramatic. I heard mostly doom and gloom from our own fans for 8 months leading to the season. we introduce badass alt jerseys, that even the players love, and complain complain.

We do have some great positive fans (several of them here on the zone).

It's changed over the years. During the historic 80's-90's run, especially after Super Bowl 19 we became the target of jealousy filled barbs . . . Chardonnay sipping, cheese eating, entitled weenies, blah, blah, blah. There was probably some truth to that, but for the most part I don't think we were much different than any other fan base.

We were pretty much off the radar for the better part of a decade before 2011. Since the reemergence our fan-base image has done a full 180 from pretentious yuppy weenies to hardened street thug hooligans. I'm not sure what percentage of the fan base actually fits the thug demographic (like the douche bags arrested for piling on the Viking fan after he was already down), but unfortunately it's that demographic that keeps generating the negative ink and fuels the image.

All in all, the perception of our fan base is one of the most negative in the NFL . . . some of it is earned, but for the most part we're still no different than any other fan base.

May be true, but those 80s teams brought the 49ers to national prominence and gained the team a national fan base. I grew up in NC, and had no reason to cheer for the Niners geographically, but as a young person I loved watching the Walsh/Seifert WCO pick apart defenses and got on board. Stayed with the Niners after NC started the Panthers franchise. 100% Faithful here.
