How on earth is that going to happen? Our offense was atrocious last year, and we lost Gore and Davis. Our defense has been totally decimated.

We still have a great team. Aldon, Willis, and Davis were either injuried or pretty much invisible most of last year anyway. Better wide receivers, great stable of backs, and some solid 2'nd year defensive players. Barring injuries, we're gonna be a lot better than you think.

Aldon, Willis and Davis were out alot last year but we also finished 8-8. Throw in we lost Raymac, Borland, Culliver, Justin Smith retired. Iupati. Gore. A whole new coaching staff killing continuity on offense.

And then there is the idea of what's next because the bad luck doesn't seem to have an end.

I am hopeful that younger players will step up but it may take a year or two to adjust to all the losses. It will be fun watchig the younger players develope and hopefully we can make the playoffs but it will be an uphill climb instead of past seasons where we just expected to be there.

I think we can cover for the other guys that are no longer here, but Aldon is a big loss.

Every NFL has talent. I'm not trying to be a negative Nancy, but a lot of those players are not elite or even proven yet. We have the potential to have talent but as of now, compared to other NFL teams, that list of players is not as special as we think

All trash! No chance! 2 wins here we come.

vs. the 2004 roster

offensive starters:

Tim Rattay (lol)
Kevan Barlow
Fred Beasley
Brandon Lloyd
Cedrick Wilson
Eric Johnson
Eric Heitmann
Brock Gutierrez
Scott Gragg

John Engelberger
Anthony Adams
Bryant Young
Derek Smith
Jamie Winborn
Tony Parrish
Ronnie Heard

no way the niners are headed for only two wins this year.

Kinda late to the thread but I love this comparo......2004 was the least talented niner time since the late 70s. On a roster of 53, there was maybe 25-30 true NFL players and only a handful that would classify as an NFL starter. Our current roster is not even close to being that devoid of talent.

I know it's a b***h, especially with all the media talking of the "fall of the 49ers" but this team can and should compete. I'm almost reminded of the same narrative that was heard during the off season on 2011. We were gonna win maybe 3 games and be in the "suck for luck" sweepstakes. Thing is football seasons are weird animals. You just never know what's gonna happen. Hell in 1999, a team that went 4-12 in '98 and lost their prized QB signing in the preseason won a title with an arena league guy. s**t happens....and things always get analysed to death in the new 24/7 news cycle, so I can see the fear, but this team is a lot more talented then it's currently getting credit for.

Of course, it's all speculation at this point. Hell, I thought the Cowboys would suck last year after a tumultuous off season, then lo and behold, they go 12 and 4 and win a play-off game.

Go figure?

Oh... they hired new coaches and had younger players to step up, signed some free agents, and had a draft? I never figured they could even DO that!

I am getting a bet placed for me in Vegas today -- $50 on our 9ers winning SB 50 :P

Probably get 70-1 odds now after the Aldon debacle.

That list doesn't even include Ray Mac. If you add the vets that are still available and 1 player for each round of the draft, and fill the rest of their roster with people that were cut. This would be a pretty competitive team.

What's funny is how many of those guys were just guys that weren't particularly important ....Jonathan Martin, Trindon Holliday, Bubba Ventrone, Josh Johnson, Alfonso Smith.....lol come on.....

And the media really loves to pump up our guys after they are no longer Niners.......WE HAD NOBODY ON NFL TOP 100 THIS YEAR......shouldn't the narrative be that we GO OUT AND GET SOME?!

Man, can't stand this media.

Guys, if this season in any way shape or form resembles 2011, it will be historic. Even better, because back then the team was mostly left alone.

If the team wins 9+ games (improving on 2014 despite the "fall from grace" "mass exodus" media narrative) the crow eating among the media and the negative NT posters will be epic.
