He was definitely Harbaugh's choice for QB of the future (cuz Alex was going to be a stop-gap no matter what's been said about it a million times) but see Harbaugh wasn't a combo HC-GM, was he. So Baalke probably said something like "look we need to get a special pass-rusher 1st round because we have a serviceable QB right now. Then let's get your Quarterback in the 2nd even if we need to move up a little." I'm sure my interpretation of whatever Harbaalke's first draft discussions were is rudimentary and oversimplified but you get the point. Reliable sources have documented in the past how interested the Bengals were in Kap at a similar spot in the 2nd round but draft ninja swooped in and positioned the Niners to make sure they got him. Bengals were allegedly happy enough to pick Dalton but there was someone in their FO who really wanted Kap. Let's just give both Harbaugh and Baalke credit for drafting Kaepernick. Problem solved.

Kaepernick is one of the few players who could possibly make an announcer say this:

Vick and Randle Cunningham could do that at one time too. Kaep IMO has as much or more skill than anyone playing his position. However, he's now learning that he can't outskill everything; s**ty play calling and crap blocking being out of his control, but forcing throws is something he can improve.

The question is ultimately if he'll end up like Vick or Cunningham. With age Cunningham developed his game as a pocket passer (decision making, touch and ball placement being the big ones; like Vick and Kap, Cunningham was a cannon arm with wheels when he came out), whereas as Vick never did and just got injured with increasing regularity.

when some mention that Kap would not be a good long term investment because he would lose his speed or whatever...I think of the Cunningham 2.0 with the Vikings. Tall, experienced, strong armed. I still think Kap would be faster than most QBs late in his career. Besides he is pretty good at avoiding big hits. (unlike Mike Vick who just too stubborn)

Kaep, Vick, Pryor, and Cunningham....now THAT is a realistic discussion!

I like that the mods are cool/lenient. I just think Nate Silver's laying out the definition is good as a reminder - a reminder to some posters around here that people see them working and know their game.

Well, we kinda are using our imagination in the absence of an actual comparison.....

I enjoy imaginations. Especially when we can use them in place of facts to help underscore a point.
