The inevitable D+ poll: Do you agree?

Yes! Why couldn't we do that last year (beef on DL and CB -- a real CB) and this year (ILB + CB).

Did we have any glaring needs like this after Goldson and Whitner and Rogers left? Baalke also brought in Antoine Bethea. Genius move.

Last year: Our CB's-by-committee (Culliver-ACL, Cox-Formally cut, Ward-Hurt, Acker/Reaser-Hurt, Johnson-Raw 4th-rounder, McFadden-Street, Cromartie-Street, etc.) ended the year top 5 and #1 in TO's so one could reasonably conclude that our DL was actually pretty darn good? And who played NT? Not Dorsey...down...Not Williams...down...but a rookie named, Dial, who had to play and did terrific even at 6'6"! And who filled in very well for Justin Smith at the end of the year? Carradine. So it looked like, in hindsight, CB and DL was addressed just fine last year.

This year: You wanted ILB and CB. We'll have to wait to see how it plays out and hopefully (for us fans) that it turns out like it did last year!

No pass rush + no offense = 8-8. I think we did have a need last year and it was not addressed, despite positive surprises from Borland/Lynch.

Who said Bethea was NOT a good move?

Looks like you gave it two threads.

It's not often were rated the best at something.

Now, I am confused. ESPN rated the 49er off season as a D+ and that was the best off season in the league?

Dang. Hard to trust anybody anymore.

I understand the D+ we lost a strong HC and a lot of talent.

Worst case scenario- Tomsula is terrible, Mangini exposes weaknesses in the defense that Fangio covered up, Kap has a down year. We finish under 5 wins. Jed cleans house and a complete rebuild is in store for 2016

Best case scenario- Baalke is the smartest guy in the room, Kap's time in QB camp shows noticeable improvement, Mangini keeps defense in top 10, Cryst can call plays in the redzone that produce TDs. We win 10 plus games

Most realistic scenario - We win 7 maybe 9 games if lucky. Any other division I'd say we could win 10 games but Arizona and Seattle should still be tough to beat. We are probably slightly better than the Rams but not much.
No, My biggest issue with the analysis is that they criticize the 2015 draft for looking towards the future, but fail to recognize that the 2013 and 2014 drafts were mostly done the same way, and that THOSE draft picks are the ones being asked to step up this year (along with the key FAs).

Of course, if any of the 2013/14 picks become great players this season after being backups for 1-2 years they'll be surprised and asking how they "came out of nowhere". Kinda like Bowman in his sophomore season replacing Spikes.

Who said Bethea was NOT a good move?

I know the question you asked earlier if there's anything you'd change the the F.O. did this offseason wasn't directed at me, but I'd like to answer.

I agree with Jim Harbaugh no longer coaching here. I believe we'd be a very good, Super Bowl contending team with him at the helm, but we would begin our eventual slide into the pack of pretenders, yet still good football teams by keeping him aboard.

I can't even rate the hiring of Jim Tomsula as head coach. I am optimistic and do not think its fair to say he will absolutely fail. None of us knows the outcome, but I feel better about this hiring than I did with the Mike Singletary hiring. If nothing else, the players have all praised his football IQ and ability to understand the big picture of what's going on, which has been lacking on this team for some time.

I thought we did fairly well in free agency and were more aggressive than I expected. Our team needed speed on offense and we have it now. Those moves open up so many more things for other players on our offense. I love the fact that we did not overpay for Frank Gore, even though it breaks my heart that he is with another team. We are truly giving our young guys a chance to sink or swim now. As for our remaining free agents, the names may seem underwhelming, but during the Baalke era, generally unwanted free agents have looked MUCH better here than they did with their previous teams, raising their value. It remains to be seen if this coaching staff can do the same, but the track record is there. With the draft, I would've liked an ILB, but I get the drafting of Jacquiski Tartt for many reasons. If anything, one may argue that Baalke could've traded back further and still have ended up with Armstead, Tartt, and an ILB. You can question the moves, but the idea that the team deserves a D+ is insane to me. I can see a B, a C, or even an I. But a D +? Unless Tomsula truly f's up as a HC, I don't see this team doing worse than 7-9.

tho we are learning to like each of the players we drafted, especially the ones we signed as UDFA, I fully believe that the initial grading on this Draft Class is just a C.. and that's because EVERYONE here were expecting to FILL some holes that was suddenly created by retirement, such such..
Hard to give it anything above a D grade at this time, to be honest.

All is not lost though. If Kaepernick can elevate his game as a passer, the 49ers will win more than lose. This can grant them a playoff shot.. and in the playoffs, anything is possible.

People overrate the Rams. Have a great front 7 but their secondary is still questionable, their O line isn't impressive, spent a first on a guy who probably starts on pup list, has a HC who is 12 games under .500 his last 10 seasons as a HC and questions on whether the coordinators are actually good.

If ESPN gave us A+++ the zone would be all over that.

But they didn't.

So, there isn't one thing you would have the FO do differently this offseason.

Not a single thing.

Everything is absolutely the best it could possibly be. Can't be improved. Not one thing.

I just look at who wrote the article. Ever since they went to assigning some writer to each team, we've got the one who "are a sandwich short of picnick". Really, Williamson first and now Guitierrez (sic). It's kind of like anytime I see an article from Jason La Canfora, I know it is mostly drivel. Those 2 ESPN writers need to move on to Oakland together as most of what they write are crap, and with the Coliseums sewage issues they make for a great match.

It's kind of like these people who grade a teams draft on the day it is over. How the heck do they know who will pan out and who will not. I trust our FO much more than I trust Kiper and the other wog, e.g. draft experts.

Do the 49ers have some questions, absolutely. But, that is why you draft talent. Next man up.

We are the best at being the worst?????

Sounds like gibberish but thanks anyway.

And we all know the preseason evaluations means so much.

Thanks.

D+ was kind.
Should have been F
As of right now i would agree with the grade on paper. Once some of our draft picks & lesser known players step up this team will look much better grade wise. Its hard to argue all tge lost talent. Tomsula is a big question mark also. But that's why tgey play the game.
D+ is about right. We lost a lot of quality guys from our team at all levels.
