I voted 'somewhere in between' because while I think there is bias, I also think most of them aren't watching very closely and don't really know the dynamics of the roster.

Didn't Gutierrez / Sando write that? Sando is a known Niner hater so anything he write comes with a grain of salt. What I find interesting is they keep talking about the players that left and how they didn't like our draft, all the while failing to realize that we addressed those issues 1-2 years ago. I get the casual fan that doesn't know this but these people are paid to know this s**t. There wasn't anyone in the draft, outside of maybe Kevin White, that would start on our team this season. I'm of the opinion that if your drafting for multiple immediate needs you're FO is not doing a good job.

That's true. But sometimes immediate needs arise. And they should be addressed?

However, there wasn't really talk about Justin Smith considering retirement until late in the season. Nobody saw Patrick Willis leaving. And Chris Borland was obviously the biggest surprise of them all. Those are all real, genuine losses that really blindedsided us (especially the last two).
Contingency plans or not, the fact remains that we did lose a tremendous amount of talent. I still that that our roster is brimming with talented players, but I'm not sure what to expect this upcoming season.

Where would White start ? And everyone and their momma know that Cooper appears far more pro ready that White.

I didn't think this was that big of a surprise and even if it is seen as such, we began preparations two years ago with the drafting of Tank Carradine. The Ray McDonald thing was more of a surprise, but again, we had Quinton Dial already and drafted Arik Armstead. I wouldn't consider either to be a true replacement just yet, but we do have some very capable DEs. The only real losses in my opinion were Chris Borland and Patrick Willis. If they want to knock the 49ers for not drafting an ILB, so be it, but what the team did in free agency and the draft is not so bad that it warrants a D+. That's just ignorant. Ray Charles could see from the grave that we needed some speed outside at receiver and Baalke has added that with the signings of Torrey Smith and Jerome Simpson (if he works out). If the O-line can give Kap some adequate protection, I think we can have a very good offense. While I am not expecting the defense to be top 5 dominant, I doubt they will be a bottom feeder as well. Unless Jim Tomsula is totally overwhelmed as a head coach, I have a hard time seeing this team do worse than 7-9.

Anyone who doesn't think Baalke and the FO expected Justin Smith to retire hasn't been paying attention.

Opinion critical of fo = irrelevant
Opinion effusive of fo = relevant
Do I have that right?
