Oh wow, Baalke said that, huh? I don't mind the strategy, it just kind of sucks that our backup is Blaine ****ing Gabbert. I'd feel much better about the approach if we had a decent backup.

Genius move...I'm seeing LOTS of versatile players...Bell can be our RZ player and 3rd QB. Saves a roster spot. Tartt plays a hybrid robber role of SS/ILB. Pinion can cover both P and PK as needed. Also saves a roster spot. And like Baalke said, every player is a "4 down player" which means they can play all 3 downs PLUS special teams as well.
When you look at this, you see we still have a good roster. If a few guys have career years, we'll still make the playoffs. Hopefully.

OK...now I hate him!

Coaching, coaching coaching! It all comes down to coaching. Walsh didn't have the most talented team when he took over and it took him a couple of years just to get NFL caliber guys on board. Joe Thomas had decimated the team.

This coaching group is taking over a very young but talented group of players who need to prove themselves. But play calling and scheme will make the difference this year...in a good way or not.
My proposed 53 with a brief explanation:

QB: Kaepernick, Gabbert (2)
HB: Hyde, Bush, Davis, Hayne (4)
FB: Miller, Millard (2)
TE: Davis, McDonald, Carrier, Bell (4)
C: Kilgore, Martin (2)
G: Thomas, Boone. Pears, Looney (4)
T: Staley, Davis, Silberman/Brown (3)
WR: Boldin, Smith, Simpson, Ellington, Patton (5)
Offense Total: 26

NT: Dorsey, Williams (2)
DE: Dockett, Carradine, Armstead, Dial, Okoye (5)
ILB: Bowman, Brooks, Wilhoite, Bellore (4)
OLB: Smith, Lynch, Harold, Lemonier (4)
FS: Reid (1)
SS: Bethea, Tartt (2)
CB: Brock, Wright, Ward, Johnson, Acker, Reaser, Cook (7)
Defense Total: 24

K: Dawson (1)
P: Pinion (1)
LS: Nelson (1)

Here is my thinking at some of the spots:

At RB, I have us letting go of Hunter, who I always was fond of, but he is injury prone and on a 1-year contract. I have Hayne taking kick return duties and handling some coverage responsibilities as he gets started.

At TE, I have us holding on to Bell to serve as the emergency QB and to act as a red zone threat as he learns the position.

AT DE, I have J. Smith retiring and Okoye finally making it on the 53-man roster. He has more potential than TJE or any other prospects on the bubble.

At ILB, I have Brooks moving inside to play alongside Bowman, so that Lynch can start outside. Brooks has the physicality to play the Ted position and I think he will be effective in that role.

At OLB, I keep Lemonier because he showed promise as a pass-rusher 2 years ago.

At CB, I'm keeping Cook because of his length and size, which is only duplicated by Johnson. I've also got Ward in this group, who could move over and play safety if need be.

Thoughts? Obviously, we are going to have to have some things break our way, but if our corners can play adequately this year, I'm seeing another Top 10 defense because of the strength of our talent in the Front 7.

Once again, as it always does, the season will turn on Kaepernick's development. I expect Hyde to break out and have a very good season and for our run game to be pretty effective, especially as we do more zone-read stuff. However, I don't really know what to expect from the passing game, as we have new pieces on the outside that could be quite effective getting down the field and opening up the underneath stuff, but they are unproven in this offense. I look forward to being an underdog this season and could see us finishing 10-6 or unfortunately 6-10.
Here is my best guess, baring injury, trades or further FA signings :

Offense
QB - Kaepernick / Gabbert
RB - Hyde / Bush / Hunter / M.Davis
FB - Miller
WR - Boldin / T. Smith / Simpson / Ellington / Patton / D. Anderson
TE - V. Davis / McDonald / Bell / B. Anderson
T - Staley / A. Davis / Pears / Brown
G - Boone / Thomas / Looney
C - Martin / Kilgore

Defense
DL - Dockett / Dorsey / Williams / Carradine / Armstead / Dial
ILB - Bowman / Bishop / Wilhoite / Wheeler / Bellore
OLB - A. Smith / Brooks / Lynch / Harold
CB - Brock / Johnson / Reaser / Acker / Wright
S - Bethea / Reid / Ward / Tartt
K - Dawson
P - Lee
LS - Nelson

PUP - Smelter

Possibilities For The PS - QB. Thompson OL. Silberman, WR. D. Davis, RB. Hayne, OL. Brown, WR. D. Anderson, TE. B. Anderson, WR. White, DL. G.Smith, FB. T. Millard - I really like a lot of these guys potential so I don't know how safe it is to stash some of these players here. Of course who knows until we see them in action.

IMO a few things here obviously if Justin Smith comes back he will be part of the roster. If Pinion plays well in the preseason Andy Lee will get cut because he makes to much and the 49ers will need the cap room next year. I can't see the 49ers keeping more than 5 CBs especially when the Nickel and Dime corners will be safeties Tartt and Ward so if I had to choose one to go it would be Cook. However, if Reaser and Acker aren't as good as we think or Johnson doesn't take that step forward and he takes a step back then Cook will slide back into the mix. Just listening to the way Baalke talks about Wright I think he makes the roster even if his preseason isn't great. I think Bellore takes Moody's job simply due to a numbers game and I think Bishop and Wheeler are better ILBs than Moody at this point.

Lemonier makes the roster over Brooks if he shows he is more capable of playing OLB like his first year in the league but if he plays like he did last year forget about it. Lemonier also plays STs so that helps but at this point Brooks makes the roster because he is the better OLB. Maybe Brooks moves inside as well Baalke seemed to be open to the idea and it seems to be something the coaches have talked about but who knows at this point. IMO he could be ok there and if he's starting he may take to it a little more but I don't love his attitude coming in out of shape last year and complaining when he was outplayed. We won't keep 5 safeties so Dahlhouse hits the streets and it doesn't matter that he plays STs because so do Reid and apparently Tartt and Ward will as well. I hate Dahl so maybe I'm a little bias. I really like Dres Anderson and I think the 49ers will have him on the roster if he's healthy if not definitely he is placed on the PUP. Darius Davis is another guy with an outside shot and could slide in as the 6th WR especially if he proves to be a dynamic PR. I don't have Hayne making the main roster at this point but if he can return kicks he may push Hunter off the roster but without seeing what he can do Hunter gets the spot for now.

I like the TE Busta and I believe he makes the 49ers keep 4 TEs. If he's not healthy he goes to the PUP and maybe Carrier takes that spot or maybe we cut McDonald if he looks bad during the preseason. IMO McDonald is going to have a breakout year. I think the 49ers only go with 6 DL if everybody on the DL is healthy and because of the depth at other spots so I say goodbye Jerrod-Eddie. Now if Armstead doesn't pick up the D or Dial and Carradine slip maybe he sticks but right now I think he goes and if Justin comes back he has zero shot unless their is an injury. I don't think the 49ers keep 2 FBs and I think if Millard plays well Miller could get cut but I haven't seen him yet so Miller gets the nod. They could keep them both but then you have to cut an OL and it's possible Silberman or Brown don't pan out or Looney could go. I didn't like the Pears signing he's older and hasn't played very well but he's a vet and the 49ers paid him a decent amount to just cut him coming out of the preseason. I'm not sold on Boone being on this team and wonder if his act is wearing thin. I could see the 49ers signing another vet and trading Boone for a mid round pick. That is just my opinion though I just have a feeling he may not be around week 1.

Personal Thoughts On The Roster - If Kap takes that all important next step we should do a lot more than just make the playoffs. Baalke has put together a deep defense and improved the running game with the addition of Mike Davis and Reggie Bush so we can win with the running game and defense. I wouldn't mind the jumbo short yardage package if Trenton Brown works out. Imagine that guy in the game as an extra blocker needing a yard to close out the game. They have scheme flexibility on offense and defense with the additions of Tartt, Bush and Bell. The defense could be smothering if Armstead picks things up quickly because they are now more aggressive, long, athletic and explosive. They also got bigger and more explosive on offense with the Torrey Smith and Reggie Bush signings combined with the drafting of Bell, Mike Davis and Trenton Brown. That brings us back to Kaep and if he can just take that next step we could be scarry good. Even if you controlled him and leaned on the running game/defense and just asked him to make 3 to 4 plays a game we would be as tough as any team in the NFL to beat. Obviously I'm optimistic and a little bias so maybe I've got blinders on and I'm just not seeing it but this team looks deep to me compared to previous years.

Way To Early Prediction - 12-4
[ Edited by IHATELOWELLCOHN on May 4, 2015 at 12:12 PM ]
Since Deandre Smelter isn't playing this season for us, we could use another veteran WR to go with Q, Torrey Smith and Ellington/Simpson. Do we make a play for a one year rental like a Welker,Wayne, James Jones or someone else??? And when Boldin leaves next year what WR in next years draft would you want (assuming we don't sign Dez or Demayrius Thomas)
My prediction as of now:

49ers 2015 Depth Chart

QB- Kaepernick, Gabbert

*7 rookies make 53-man roster

Practice Squad

QB- Dylan Thompson
FB- Trey Millard
WR- Dres Anderson
OL- Trenton Brown
OL- Dillon Farrell
DT- Kaleb Ramsey
LB- Marcus Rush
CB- Kenneth Acker
S- Jermaine Whitehead

PUP/IR

WR- DeAndre Smelter
TE- Busta Anderson

NOTES
  • *Five "running backs" I know but Hayne is really only a special teams player, just technically classified as a running back on the depth chart.
  • *I have Ahmad Brooks moving to ILB as I think he is well suited to play there. His pass rush skills may start to decline and his run stuffing ability will be useful in the middle of the field.
  • *As others have mentioned, Blake Bell will be the emergency 3rd quarterback. Also, Carrier is kind of a hybrid and can line up wide, so 4 tight ends make the roster.
  • *Surprise cuts: Andy Lee, Corey Lemonier, Joe Looney, Nick Moody
Dillon Farrell will make the 53. Just watch
Offense:
24 or 25

QB: Kap, Gabbert (2)
RB: Hyde, Bush, Hunter, Davis (4)
FB: Miller (if not suspended, Millard if suspended) (1)
TE: Davis, McD, Bell (3)
OL: Staley, Thomas, Kilgore, Boone, A. Davis, Pears, Looney, Martin (8)
WR: Smith, Boldin, Ellington, Patton, Simpson (5)

So that's 23. There's room for 1 or 2 more from this list:

Chuck Jacobs WR
Dillon Farrell OL
Trent Brown OL
Ian Silberman OL
Carrier TE
Celek TE
Anderson TE (pup?)
Dylan Thompson QB
Jarryd Hayne RB

We've gone with 2 QB's before, but it's a scary proposition.
I think all 4 RB's make the 53.
Maybe 1 FB and add Carrier?
Those 5 WR make the 53. (good reports of Simpson)
I think Bell makes the 53 at TE (4th round pick)
We've gone with only 8 OL the last 2 years, Maybe go with 9 this year, but not 10.

Defense:
25 or 26

DL: Dorsey, Williams, Dockett, Armstead, Tank, Dial (6)
ILB: Bowman, Wilhoite, Wheeler, Bellore (seems a lock due to contract?) (4)
OLB: Aldon, Lynch, Brooks, Harold (4)
CB: Brock, Wright, Johnson, Cook (4) +2 more
S: Bethea, Reid, Tartt, Ward (4) +1 more

That's 22. With 2 more CB's and 1 more S, that's 25. There's room for 1 more at most. If Justin comes back he's it. We've gone with 6 CB's and 5 S's the last 2 years, look for that to continue.

Pick 2 from:

Reaser
Acker
McFadden
Cromartie

Pick 1 from:

Dahl, McCray

If Justin doesn't come back, pick 1 from:

Ramsey
Okoye
TJE
Purcell
Lemon
Bishop
Skov
Moody

ST: 3

There's going to be some big-time cuts this year. IMO we have a playoff caliber roster, let's see what the coaching staff can do with it.
52 players plus 5 likely to be cut or placed on PS.

Offense (at risk in bold)
QB Kap (Gabbert/Bell)
RB Hyde (Bush/Hunter/Davis)
FB Miller (Millard)
TE V. Davis (McDonald/Bell)
WR T. Smith/Boldin (Ellington/Patton/Simpson)
OT Staley/Davis (Pear/Brown)
OG Thomas/Boone (Looney/Silberman)
OC Kilgore (Martin)
26 (23)

Defense
DE Tank/J Smith (Dial/ T.J.E/Dockett/Armstead)
DT Williams/ Dorsey
ILB Wilhoite/Bowman (Wheeler/Moody)
OLB A. Smith/Brooks (Lynch/Harold/Lemonier)
CB Brock/Johnson (Wright/Reeser/ Acker)
FS Reid (Ward)
SS Bethea (Tartt)
26 (24)

Special Teams
P Lee
K Dawson
KR Haynes
PR D Davis

It's really gonna be tough decisions around here if Justin Smith decides to return.

Yeah...a good problem to have but painful none the less!

SS Craig Dahl
P Andy Lee

Surprises:
Justin Smith retires . Ian Williams is cut to save $1.16M and b/c Dial can also slide inside to NT as needed but Dial becomes a starting LDE. We go heavier at DE for this reason and Okoye makes it beating out Ramsey and TJE. Hayne is sent to the PS but is promising. We keep two FB's. Two UDFA's make it in WR's Darius Davis & Dres Anderson over Jerome Simpson for ST's ability and upside at the Y and Z WR positions. Trenton Brown beats out Ian Silberman b/c he loses weight and can play T and G. Wheeler wins out the sole ILB backup role as bowman looks "Fantastic!" while Bellore is the primary ST leader and 4th backup ILB; Brooks can also slide over as needed. Acker and Andy Lee are tough cuts but also save some cap space. Craig Dahl is FINALLY cut! Marcus Martin wins at C and Baalke goes 2-deep at most positions of like-skill players (i.e. Hyde-Davis and Bush-Hunter). Versatility remains the theme and Rory 'Busta' Anderson is one of those examples who loses 10-15 pounds and moves to the X WR position (still coaches up at TE/H-back).

All our rookies make the team save for Silberman!

^^^ I thought we had 89 players on the roster. Who am I missing (2 players)?
