There's one thing saving the 49ers from a dreaded Millen grade. That would be Eli Harold, who was a steal in the third round. Discussed as a late-first-round possibility, Harold could eventually start at outside linebacker. However, he may not see much action this season because of what the team already has at the position. Was Bill Belichek a genius during his first 5 years and before Tom Brady? No. Sometimes you need the right situation to show your true talents and that's what happened with the Niners and Fangio/Harbaugh.

We had a top 5 defense last season with an unprecedented amount of injuries to key defensive players and that was mainly due to Fangios genius. Talent has to be there but you also need someone that can do something with that talent which is why Fangio was such an integral aspect to our team the last 4 years.

So bad draft because no day 1 starter

Cincy - Cedric Ogbeuchi OT def won't start in 2015
Pittsburgh - Bud Dupree OLB Might start if he can beat out Moates
Denver - Shane Ray OLB won't start in 2015 barring injury
Arizona - DJ Humphries OT could start but he does need development
Carolina - Shaq Thompson LB won't start barring injury
Baltimore - Breshard Perriman might start but no sure thing
Dallas - Bryan Jones CB Likely starter
Detroit - Laken Tomlinson OG Likely starter
Indianapolis - Phil Dorsett WR won't start
Green Bay - Damarious Randall DB won't start
Seattle - Pick for Jimmy Graham
New England - Malcolm Brown probably backup to Branch

So of 12 playoff teams in 2015 only two drafted likely day 1 starters. 5 drafted guys that almost assuredly won't start in 2015.

He lost that credibility with his continual talk about Harbaugh being an offensive genius. Great HC but offensive genius he is not.

I can't say that it was a home run but it's this regime's 1st draft. I think people have a problem with it because we've been trained to understand what a good Niner draft looks like. It certainly wasn't that. It's different.

It all will be earned by taking it, not having it given to us. The chip created by all the speculation about how this team is lost will be evident on the field. He took the Browns to the playoffs, that is still the last time that the Cleveland Browns were in the playoffs. If you get the Factory of Sadness to the playoffs, you're a genius in my book.

If DGB had fallen just a little bit further and we used our 2nd on him then I would have LOVED this draft.

The 2nd rounder is the only pick I don't like.

Now, let's look at it from Baalke's perspective based on BPA and how it fits Team Needs & Scheme:
1 (15/15) DE Arik Armstead - Traded back to 17 and acquired 4 (18/117) in 2015 and Charger's 5th in 2016 - Like Baalke alluded too, it's rare to find a 3-4 4-tech DE let alone one that is rated so highly and one that has such a high ceiling (think Richard Seymour or Calais Campbell). Baalke knows going into this pick that we've already got the best DL coaches on the planet. It was either AA or Danny Shelton here IMHO. It's MUCH harder to find this player vs. a dominant 2-gap NT like Wilfork. And in our defense NT only plays 40% of the snaps. We made the right choice IMHO.
2 (14/46) SS/ILB Jaquiski Tartt - Our dime and nickel backs (like Fangio noted last year when referring to Ward as a "starter") play 60% of the snaps vs. our NT who plays 40%. Tartt is another "starter" and will not only play the role of Kam Chancellor in our defense but allow us to save Bowman's knee and/or push Wilhoite to the bench in coverage packages essentially making us much "stronger down the middle" of the field as Baalke noted.
3 (15/79) OLB Eli Harold - Like Baalke said, "You can never have too many pass rushers." Enough said. Jason Tarver is going to love developing this hard worker. He'll also get to learn from his idol in Aldon Smith and behind Brooks and Lynch as well. That's the best rotation in the NFL right now.
4 (14/114) To Buffalo for Stevie Johnson
4 (18/117) From San Diego TE Blake Bell - We've been b***hing about our RedZone play the entire HaRoman era. Now we get a 6'6" TE with a tremendous catching radius, huge hands, even bigger upside and who can also play some QB if needed (Wildcat? Read Option?) in the RZ. Sparano is going to love developing this kid.
4 (27/127) From Denver RB Mike Davis - Not sure how anyone can not like this pick. Baalke likes to have like-players at each spot on the roster. RB1 he's now got Hyde - Davis and RB2 Bush - Hunter
4 (33/132) Compensatory WR DeAndre Smelter - If we couldn't get that X WR in the 2nd round (ala DGB) you had to instantly start thinking "developmental rounds" which is why Baalke had met with Darren Waller & Vince Mayle late. We got the best of the 3 IMHO and like with all the other players, he has time to work into a starting role learning from one of the best veterans in the game (Boldin). Finally, he gets to learn from a real WR coach in Adam Henry.
5 (15/151) - Traded back to the 5th (29/165) and acquired the Colt's 7th (27/244)
5 (29/165) P/PK Bradley Pinion - Dude can punt and place kick; that's great to have when you have an aging punter and a 40 year old PK.
6 (14/189) T Ian Silberman - What, you guys weren't enamored with Jonathan Martin or Pears as one of our swing-T's? Here you go! Chris Foerster & Eric Wolford are going to love developing this kid.
7 (27/244) From Indianapolis G Trenton Brown - Well hello to our next "pulling G." A 350-360 pound man who can dunk? Um yeah...again...Chris Foerster & Eric Wolford are going to love developing this kid and he provides additional competition and push at the G positions which are already deep.
7 (29/246) From Indianapolis - Traded for Dallas' 6th in 2016
7 (37/254) Compensatory WR 'Busta' Anderson - IMHO this guy looks like T.O. and I have a sense we're going to have him compete at the X WR position as well along with Issac Blakeney & DeAndre Smelter (when healthy)

The bottom line is most will be worked into 60% of the snaps via many packages (like Ward last year prior to the injury)...offensive and defensive packages. Most also have much ST abilities as well. They will be coached up well and utilized now and they will be allowed to grow and develop properly over the next year to replace players such as V.Davis, Pears, Boldin, Bethea, Dawson/Lee, Iupati, Brooks and Justin. In short, we'll get great usage from most players this year (including ST's) en route to bigger roles next year. Like Baalke stated, he wanted "4 down players." He got just that IMHO!

Yep, they sure did. I should have said the last time Cleveland WON a playoff game....interestingly enough it was versus Parcells and the Patriots.

This is the optimism and excitement I like in our fans. Everyone is different but when you think like this you can enjoy the season as the entertainment it is to be

Didn't like the the 1st or 2nd round pick. I preferred a number of other players to the ones we picked in particular at RB.

Additionally, super frustrated in no ILB or CB when there were a number of players I really wanted to see on the 9ers....

That's why Balke make the big bucks I guess. O hope it works out for him....

You cant go into next season with potentially only Carradine and Dial at DE. Its a lot easier to plug and play a CB than a DL which take longer to develop which is why getting one this year was prudent. If you have a dominant DL and front seven it allows you to get by with lesser CB's.

Don't get it or don't want to get it...I think some people are just not happy if they are happy...hmm...

The front seven took a hit with McDonald and perhaps another if J Smith retires, but they planned for it by bringing in Carradine, Dial, Ramsey and keeping Jerod-Eddy. Now they have brought in another competent guy who is known for being a tough run defender, just what the team needs, and people think it is a wasted pick? Justin Smith is one of the greatest DL of all time and he averaged about 6.5 sacks per year. That's not something the niners 3/4 is geared toward. If Armstead can tie up a double team every down it will allow A Smith to continue assaulting QBs.

Also don't get why people have difficulty understanding that there may have been two or three CBs in the draft that would have been better than the young guys drafted last year--Reaser and Acker. I believe it's just possible the coaches, scouts and Baalke got together before the draft and analyzed just which guys would be upgrades over the current roster. Armstead is different than Carradine so they may make a good team going forward and Armstead has much more potential than Dial; who is much better than I thought he would be, able to play anywhere on the line. One of the good things about a 3/4 is that you can use interchangable guys and rely on LBs to fill and/or pursue.

I'm mad that we didn't address our inside LB position which I assume was due to picks taken before us. All the more reason to get our guy in the 2nd round instead of Tartt and roll the dice we get him in round 3
